  • Cross Country - Ipswich Tigers run in Pierre

    -deg|Aug 23, 2023

Ipswich plans to enter high school cross country action in Pierre on August 25 and will also likely attend a meet in Mobridge the next day, according to head coach Todd Thorson. (His assistant will be Taylor Thorson.) One of their regular-season schedule's highlights should be a September 9 meet in Ipswich and the Tigers will also host the Lake Region Conference (LRC) meet on October 4. Their regional is set for Webster on October 11 and the state meet will then be in Sioux Falls on October 21. The varsity girls will include senior Hailey...

Did you ever get a wedding invite from somebody that you didn't know was even on the planet? We recently did exactly that. It was missing its entire address on the envelope, only addressed to PO Box Ipswich. The Post Office took a stab and put it in our box. So if you know Abigail and Mathieu who will be married in September stop in the Tribune office by the Subway for your invite. They ask you to RSVP by August 20. We occasionally do receive a graduation or shower invitation, but we usually do know the people who sent it. Anyway it's quite a...

  • IHS Footall varsity season begins Friday in Faulkton

    -deg|Aug 16, 2023

This year's Ipswich varsity football team will currently have 21 players with only three seniors. But they include Kadyn Weisser, Trevor Heinz and Chet Peterson, three names that fans should definitely recognize. And there are some additional juniors that should provide more upper-class leadership. They are Max Kulesa, Rasmus Loken, Justin Rohrbach, Tucker Kadlec and Bohdi Wilcox. Another good aspect of this year's team are 11 sophomores who should gain experience as the season progresses along. They are Kyle Hettich, Jaxon Holt, Casey Geditz,...

Fortunately the heaviest rain storms avoided us early Saturday during the opening hours of the Ipswich community rummage sales. But the precipitation would unfortunately intensify which still didn't hinder the sales that were totally indoors. On the other hand it may have even improved the attendance at those locations which were totally indoors or at least mostly inside. There had already been some shower activity late Friday, late enough in the day to probably not affect the remainder of the Edmunds County Achievement Days that were...

This column is often about the weather and it really should be this week, featuring a heat wave that's in progress pretty much all over the country the way it sounds! But it might get a little cooler later in our work week? We'll see about that! But don't get your winter coat out of the closet. It might not be that cool for awhile. Monday is the end of July and it's starting to be time for your fresh garden produce, unless it has fallen victim to the heat. There is always a chance for a thunder storm or two this time of the year, especially...

Our sump pump has been intermittent lately. But I think it was mostly dry last week. But that was OK because it allowed some outdoor Fourth of July-related activities including some that had been postponed due to too much rain. One of these would have been their scheduled Fireworks which they postponed until last Friday evening. They were also able to have their snowmobiles on the water competition (Mina Lake obviously) that night. Where I guess only the spectators would have minded bad weather during the competition. But the entrants probably...

Man, July is almost half over and you all know what that means. One recent evening last week was feeling real chilly. Already felt like fall was right around the corner. And school as well! Go in any store and you can see Back-to-School deals. With all the busy extra-curricular events that are always scheduled during August. Our towns will be having city-wide rummage sales. Hosmer and Roscoe have sales on July 22 and a few weeks later on Aug. 5 is Ipswich’s sales. So that should be fun for you bargain hunters! And don’t forget 4-H Ach...

The Trail Days weekend offered a variety of events (except rain which we desperately needed). Even if you chose to participate in only one or two of them! Kudos to everybody on the Trail Days committee. There looks like a few more area events which are being planned starting perhaps with Leola's annual Rhubarb Festival and Bowdle Tower Days, both set for June 23-25. And their schedule looks to be equally crowded featuring a parade and plenty of activities. If your kids didn't get enough candy in the Ipswich parade! And there are some food...

When you’re in the vicinity of the Trail Days Arena this weekend drive by Schriver’s Funeral Home. They have a new cool sign announcing their identity. It was designed and set up by Bryan Scherr. We hope to have more about his new project in a future edition. I’m sure many of you will be in the area on Saturday. There will be plenty to do at the Trail Days Arena. An insert in the local papers has a schedule of the activities. Looks like a busy weekend for you guys and stay safe. Have fun!...

We were driving in the evening over the weekend for a weather check. Big clouds surrounded us. But there were no rains coming, but what did we see? A bright half rainbow! It showed up when it hadn't even rained yet. But it did manage a little measurable precip a little later in the evening or perhaps overnight. And we have had some days with 90-degree temperatures along with strong wind. And that were to be expected when summer actually arrives, I guess! But our weather seems to go from one extreme to the other this time of the year. So we...

  • Ipswich boys State B Track & Field Meet champions

    -deg|May 31, 2023

The Ipswich tracksters had a very productive State B weekend on May 25, 26 and 27 in Sioux Falls. "What a year," said IHS Coach Todd Thorson at the welcome home event Sunday night. That's because the Tiger boys would tie for first in their team standings along with Gregory with 54 points apiece. Meanwhile the IHS girls would finish in eighth place with 28 points there. And in both cases they were mostly led by second through eighth placements, rather than firsts. And that would be expected at...

There is more high school sports to mention in this column again this week, even though the 2022-23 school year has ended. You guessed correctly that I would congratulate the newly-crowned Ipswich boys track and field team that indeed tied with Gregory with 54 team points apiece. Things were that close all three days of the State B boys event. Meanwhile the IHS girls would finish in eighth place exactly landing in the top eight. So they did OK as well. And congratulations to the Edmunds Central and Ipswich boys golfers who will both be competin...

    -deg|May 31, 2023

Ipswich and Edmunds Central golfing boys have earned a trip to the upcoming State B during recent regional action in Huron. Edmunds Central placed second as a team and will thus advance its entire team intact to the upcoming State B. And Ipswich was only third as a team, but were able to individually advance four golfers. (Sully Buttes was first in the regional boys team standings.) The Raiders team consisted of Cole Bukaske and Harrison Beyers both in seventh at 86. And Seth Hettick was 15th...

You can get a lot of fresh air at an outdoor sports event. The problem is though that some days the air has been anything but fresh. And they even had to postpone the Class A region in Mobridge for one day because of that! That wasn't really the case for the Class B regional in Gettysburg. It went on as scheduled last Thursday and Ipswich was able to sweep the event, crowning both boys and girls team champions. Meanwhile when the A meet was finally held on Friday the host Tigers also swept their respective team events as well. But North...

  • IHS boys and girls Regon 6B champs

    -deg|May 24, 2023

The Ipswich Tiger track and field program was alive and well at the Region 6B meet in Gettysburg last Thursday. That's because both the Tiger girls and boys teams placed first. The IHS girls staved off runners-up Faulkton 144 to 128, but the Tiger boys simply overwhelmed second-place Herreid/Selby Area 198.5 to 84. "This was the last region meet for SD schools and the Tigers really had a great day," exclaimed coach Todd Thorson. He agreed that the girls were able to score some crucial points in...

Can you believe this? Believe it or not, it is nearly time for the 2022-23 school year's varsity athletic events to conclude with their respective post-season schedules. This will indeed be do or die time in both track and field action and golf. So good luck to our area athletics in their respective regional and state events. And we'll hope that the weather is favorable. That would also be more pleasant for both the athletes and their fans who attend. And the end of the school year is also right around the corner. Ipswich had their graduation...

  • Big day for Ipswich track and field in LRC

    -deg|May 17, 2023

It was a memorable day for this year's version of the Lake Region Conference track and field action on Tuesday, May 9 in Ipswich! "What a day for the Tigers," explained Coach Thorson. "I couldn't be more proud of these seniors and our team." He added: "This is the sixth year in a row we have swept the conference titles and it is the 17th title in a row for our girls. We joined the Lake Region in 2006 and the girls have never lost a team title." The Tiger boys have also had plenty to brag about...

Congratulations to the Class of 2023, no matter what school you attend. The Class of 2023 encompasses quite an area, not just geographically, but all different levels of education as well. Today’s students have more educational opportunities than ever before and thanks to technology, that will continue to be true. Even more so! Degrees may be obtained online through major universities and those options can certainly be convenient for the non- traditional off-campus student. Especially if you’re trying to hold down a job or two and continue you...

May Day was May 1 and it was significant for several reasons. We could begin with our newspapers and our other office related events or projects. Including all the end of year school related events just to name a few! Believe it or not May has been our historically busiest month, even more so than December. I don't know whether or not you are old enough to remember giving and receiving little baskets full of candy on May Day. That was indeed something to remember. Now apparently undecided high school seniors could announce their college choice...
