    The 2023 Mina Lake Freedom Festival is planned to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. The event will begin on Saturday, July 1 with some exercise. The 5K Run/2 Mile Fun Walk/Kid Run begins at 9 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m. at the Wakeside.     The South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) announces that nearly 200 cities, counties, and tribes across South Dakota will collectively receive $500,000 in grants to combat mosquitoes and prevent the spread of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2023. These grants have been allocated to support local efforts in controlling mosquito populations and reducing the risk of WNV transmission.   • Baking workshop for County 4-Hers

    Several members attended the baking workshop by Deanne Hoyle and Ava Davis on June 21 at the 4-H Building in Ipswich. They learned the proper way to measure liquid and solid ingredients. They also learned how they would need to display them when entering them at Achievement Days or the State Fair. Each member went home with the bars, cookies, or muffins they made.   • Sales tax rate decrease July 1

    On July 1, 2023, South Dakota’s tax rate will decrease from 4.5 percent to 4.2 percent. The three-tenth percent sales tax decrease was created by House Bill 1137. The state tax rates affected by the changes are: • Sales and use tax; • Excise tax on farm machinery and farm attachment units; • Amusement device tax; and, • Motor vehicle gross receipts tax.     Tickets are on sale now for the annual 4-H Achievement Days BBQ which will be held on Thursday, August 3 at the 4-H grounds in Ipswich. Please note the date change.     Ipswich School District School Board election on June 20 could not have been any closer. Scott Braun had 87 votes, Todd Hettich had 86 votes and Rhonda Geditz had 73 votes. They did a recount on Wednesday morning with the same results. There were 1,651 voters in the school district....

    I can’t believe its that time of the year (summer). Yes, June is almost over and we finally got some much welcome rain.     Ron Bunnell, South Dakota Lions District 5SW District Governor stopped for a visit recently with the Ipswich Lions Club.
