    Local residents will celebrate Independence Day this weekend. Many offices and businesses may be closed on Friday, July 3 in anticipation of the 4th on Saturday.     Several local youth participated in the Kickball Tournament in Roscoe on Saturday, June 27. The event was a fundraiser for the 2021 Edmunds Central Senior Trip.   • LEPC meeting Thursday in Ipswich

    The quarterly meeting of the Edmunds County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will be held on Thursday, July 2 in the Ipswich Fire Hall at 7:30 p.m. The meeting agenda includes grant funds updates. They are attempting to schedule Operations Classes in Bowdle and Ipswich and an Awareness Class in Ipswich. A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) meeting and a Citizen’s Corp.     Starting July 1, drivers in South Dakota will no longer be able to use mobile electronic devices, including cell phones, for texting or other purposes while they drive. House Bill 1169, which was passed during the 2020 legislative session, prohibits drivers from using a phone for social media uses. The new law allows drivers to hold the phone to their ear to talk, but any data entry other than putting the contact number into the device must be done under a hands-free mode.     The Edmunds County Conservation District has a youth garden in Ipswich. District Manager Meshele Townsend said the garden is usually a project of youth, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic she is doing the work. "I do so miss the kids," she said.
