  • Memorial ride participants spend night in Ipswich on way to North Dakota

    A group of riders rode into Ipswich Monday on horseback. The Native American riders and supporters hope to bring awareness during the week-long ride. The group, made up of people of all ages, left Crow Creek on August 28. They are planning on arriving at the Whitestone Hill State Historical Site, southeast of Kulm, N.D. on Sept. 3.     South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson visited the Gisi Pheasant Farms facility east of Ipswich on Monday, Aug. 31. Greg Gisi gave Rep. Johnson a tour of the area where pheasant hatching will be in full operation in the spring. The Gisi's find it hard to hire enough seasonal workers when they are busy, so they rely on temporary immigrant workers. Gisi staff told Rep.   • Volleyball tourney site changed

    The Mobridge volleyball tournament, planned on Sept. 12. was split into two sites this year. Ipswich, North Central and Leola/Frederick will play in Ipswich and Mobridge-Pollock, Stanley County and McIntosh will play in Mobridge. Two tournament winners will be announced. The state suggests using the best of five format for this tournament. For starters, there are seven home appearances for the Tiger team during the month and a lengthy home stand at the end of September actually extends into October for two more home clashes.     The 2020 State Fair 4-H Poultry and Rabbit Shows were held on Saturday, August 29 in Huron. Three families did an excellent job representing Edmunds County. Members were only able to have two entries per species. Each of the four members attending received top honors for one of their entries.     The Main Street businesses and the Ipswich Development Corporation hosted an Open House on Saturday, August 22. The festivities included a fundraiser lunch. The business owners donated $200 each to the Tiger Post and the Ipswich Athletic Boosters.     John Roth, 91, died May 3, 2020 at LaCrosse Health & Rehabilitation in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. John was born on the family farm August 25, 1928 to Valentine and Katherine (Goetz) Roth. He married Lillian M. Hammrich Sept. 30, 1952 in Ipswich. Lillian passed away May 17, 2019. They were together 67 years. John spent his whole life in the mining business. He worked at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead for 14 years, later moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to work at the Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg, Idaho for 17 years until it shut down.     Ipswich/Edmunds Central scored in every quarter on the way to a 42-0 LRC high school football win over Northwestern last Friday in Mellette. The hosts weren’t doing themselves any favors with some costly turnovers and 10 sacks and the Tigers were able to attain a 16-0 first quarter lead. They led 28-0 at intermission.     The Ipswich volleyball team picked up a pair of hard-fought opening week 3-1 wins by taking control of momentum at the end. The Tigers won a Lake Region Conference match over Aberdeen Christian to start their season last Tuesday at home in the Tiger Den. The team then went on the road for a non-conference victory over Highmore-Harrold last Thursday in Highmore. But first things first!     Ipswich attended a season-opening cross country invite in Pierre last Friday. At least one IHS runner was entered into each of the seven events. For instance, there were two Tiger girls in the 4000-meter varsity run, won by Jessica Lutmer of Pierre Riggs in 16:09.75. There were 21 total runners there, including Ipswich's Ashley Ptacek, tenth in 18:19.64 and Emily DeRaad 14th in 18:45.26.
