By Dana Hess For the S.D. Newspaper Association Expanding Medicaid in South Dakota is either a prudent use of tax dollars designed to enhance health care coverage or a disaster that will bust the state budget. Those are the arguments offered by backers and opponents of Amendment D, a measure that would expand access to Medicaid in the state. Funded by the state and the federal governments, Medicaid provides medical coverage for low-income people. Amendment D expands Medicaid benefits to any person age 18 or under 65 whose income is at or below...
Last week we mentioned there were two Aberdeen area events this past weekend — the South Dakota Film Festival in Aberdeen and the Northeast S.D. Celtic Faire at Richmond Lake. Being near 100% Scotch/ Irish I voted for the latter and a wise choice it turned out to be. They had door prizes both days and the grand door prize was a guitar signed by the members of the Steel City Rovers band from Canada. Guess who won. You guested it — ME! Correct. And what was amazing was that they first announced a possible winning ticket who didn’t claim it. S...

Ipswich attended a cross country invite at Webster last Tuesday that was run under Class A team scoring criteria. That required a minimum of four runners, not just three like in Class B hosted meets. But the Tigers were able to obtain some impressive results in their various divisions. For instance Xavier Kadlec placed eighth in the boys' 5K in 19:04.35 that was won by Deuel's Ricky Berndt in 17:33.77. And Turner Thorson was ninth in 19:19.47. Dylan Wald finished 25th in 20:24.20. There was a total of 59 entrants and Frederick Area placed...

But the Tigers then dropped a straight-sets match to Kimball-White Lake, the eventual champion, 25-22 and 25-16, sending them into the third-place match. They lost to Herreid/Selby Area 25-18 and 26-24 to get fourth place. Versus Langford Ipswich was...
Having to face Warner and Northwestern in high school volleyball with a day of rest between them was no picnic last week. But that might have been a little better than meeting the two powerful LRC league foes on consecutive nights. At any rate Northwestern swept Ipswich 3-0 last Thursday at Northwestern, similar to Warner's straight sets win at Ipswich two nights earlier. (Northwestern's respective set score leads were 25-15, 25-9 and 25-16.) The Wildcats were 73-84 at the net with 32 kills, while Ipswich went 77-92 with 21 kills -- quite...
Ipswich lost a 44-26 varsity FB outcome to Herreid/ Selby Area last Friday in Ipswich. Ipswich got a successful scoring drive in its first possession, which was capped by Colby Sylte's 70-yard run. But the PAT play failed leaving the Tigers up 6-0 if only briefly. The visiting team would end up with a 24-14 first-quarter lead that all started with a 55-yard TD scamper by Brenden Begeman and their successful conversion play. The Tigers were eventually forced to punt. The Wolverines began what wou...
