The first phase for a new park has been completed south of the Ipswich Athletic Complex. A new basketball court has been completed. A memorial bench in honor of Julie (Heinz) Johnson has been placed beside the court recently. Julie, a 1983 IHS graduate, passed away on June 13, 2019 after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. South Dakota lawmakers are redrawing the state’s political boundaries. Every year after the Census is completed, the state’s Legislature is constitutionally required to redraw its legislative district boundaries to accommodate shifts in population and ensure equal representation to all South Dakotans. Lately, the old expression “When it rains, it pours” has been the case with a good old-fashioned cloudburst or two. Ellen Rosemarie Schaub Wethington, 92, passed away gracefully and peacefully on October 3, 2021, alongside a loving family who cared for and loved her very much. She was born May 2, 1929, in Ipswich, and was raised on the prairie alongside eight siblings during the 1930's Great Depression. Ipswich had a busy week last week in high school volleyball action. The Tiger girls started with a LRC visit to Faulkton that resulted in a 3-0 loss on Tuesday, Oct. 5. The girls then attended a Saturday invite hosted by Potter County, where they would finish in sixth place, losing the placement match 2-1 to Faith. Faulkton would win the entire tourney, defeating Potter County 2-0 in their championship match, while Wolsey-Wessington topped Philip 2-0 for third. Ipswich obtained a huge Lake Region Conference high school football win over Leola/Frederick Area last Friday in Leola by a final margin of 62-20. The game was indeed somewhat closer than that final score would indicate as the two league rivals had traded early blows. Ipswich had jumped ahead with a 30-yard TD run by Carson Gohl and Ian Beyers passed to Matthew Jaenisch for the PAT points. Ipswich hosted the Lake Region Conference cross country event Wednesday, Oct. 6 at Split Rock Country Club. The Frederick Area girls topped their 5K varsity run 13 to 20 over the runners-up from Northwestern. Meanwhile Ipswich placed third as a girls' team with its 25 team points among the six teams that were eligible for the varsity standings.
