Last week we mentioned there were two Aberdeen area events this past weekend — the South Dakota Film Festival in Aberdeen and the Northeast S.D. Celtic Faire at Richmond Lake. Being near 100% Scotch/ Irish I voted for the latter and a wise choice it turned out to be. They had door prizes both days and the grand door prize was a guitar signed by the members of the Steel City Rovers band from Canada. Guess who won. You guested it — ME! Correct. And what was amazing was that they first announced a possible winning ticket who didn’t claim it. S...
It’s so busy this time of the year that two of my personal favorite annual events turned out to be the same weekend — the S.D. Film Festival and the Celtic Faire on the beautiful shores of Richmond Lake. (The film festival is in Aberdeen.) Plus people can attend Saturday’s huge Subway volleyball extravaganza in the Tiger Den starting at 10 a.m. Our Tuesdays are exceptionally busy in the fall with sports stories, etc. This Tuesday one of Tena’s old USD classmates originally from Frederick (and her husband) popped into our office. It was a nice...
AUGUST LEGISLATIVE REPORT: Let me start this report by expressing thank you to everyone in South Dakota’s workforce! Our South Dakota hard work and commitment to a job well done, continues to make South Dakota the great state it is! And District 23, with our rural roots, exemplifies the awesome reputation of a high-quality workforce in demand throughout the nation. I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Labor Day celebration! Labor Day also officially marks the end of the summer, the fall season is upon us! As with many years, this s...
It’s IHS homecoming week, otherwise known as Gala Day. I understand Edmunds Central will be doing their homecoming festivities soon. Congrats to Ipswich’s royalty and all the various athletes this week. Let’s hope the weather cooperates for the outdoor events, including the respective parades. So good luck guys and gals. And see more about local area sports elsewhere in this newspaper....
To the Editor: Case in Point The August 20 issue of the Miller Press’ coverage of the Miller City Council meeting on August 15 makes a strong case for the catastrophe that could be in the making here in Ipswich. The city of Miller is about to implement phase III of a multi-year paving project. The original bid price for the asphalt to complete that phase of the project was $545 per ton. The current price for asphalt is quoted as $875/ton; a 62% increase that stands to cost the city an additional $1,122,000. Now the discussion is: how to m...
The school year has just begun and already they’ve postponed at least one event because of excessive rain at a scheduled cross country meet in Mobridge last Friday. I guess the old saying is certainly here this year, “When it rains it pours.” That certainly has been true lately. So lets hope the weather is more cooperative the rest of the school year. Is that too good to be true? We’ll have to wait and see. We have an early deadline for next week’s papers due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday Sept. 5. The deadline will be on Friday at 4 p.m....
The weather at the Brown County Fair is somewhat legendary for its variety and that proved to be the case again. The two brief times we went there was on Thursday afternoon and again on Sunday afternoon. That day proved to be beautiful in every respect. Both Thursday and Friday saw monsoon rain. Thursday we watched a vocalist with guitar talent with Americana style. We got caught in the Thursday monsoon right after the concert was done. Fortunately we didn’t get too soaked on our walk back to the car. The weather is predicting more rain l...
It’s already hectic and beginning to feel a lot like fall for multiple reasons. The mornings are already somewhat cooler and will continue in that direction. Some people are seeing that various animals already have longer coats than normal. We’ll see! And of course school will be beginning very soon. The fall sports schedules will be getting underway on Friday starting with Faulkton Area vs. Ipswich in Ipswich football action and the North Central football team headed to Warner on Friday as well....
Storm sewer project I have to apologize for not having exact numbers but the timing of the 1 ½ hour “open house” prevents accessing detailed information in time to get this letter into the Ipswich Tribune in time for publication before the City Counsel’s possible vote next Monday. So, I’ll have to go with what I know so far. First of all, the total cost of the proposed project is north of $13 million. To put it another way, that would be more than $13,000 for every man, woman and child currently living in Ipswich. The project will be done in...
We attended a few Ipswich rummage sales, but not all. I know at least one person who quite likely did exactly that. There were 26 sales on the map, and possibly a few not on the list. We were hoping to have a little sale of our own, but had too much work that week (including the usual 4-H Achievement Days events). But the weather on Saturday was as perfect as it could be during the sale hours. So here’s hoping you enjoyed last week (despite the sizzling temps) and that you are looking forward to the upcoming school year. (Parents p...
Believe it or not — August is indeed Back-to-School Month. But there are lot of other things this month starting with 4-H Achievement Days and the Ipswich Commercial Club’s City-Wide Rummage Sales on Saturday. All you bargain hunters out there have fun. (Maybe you found all you need in Hosmer last week.) You can also get a bite to eat Saturday at the Ipswich U.C.C. sale and lunch. Some of the nearly 30 sales may also have a treat or two. I hear that the WIN baseball team are headed to the 2022 South Dakota American Legion State Class “B...
Did the July 24th weather live up to its advance billing of being the nicest day of the year? As I recall, it wasn’t too bad at all, except for that constant wind. But it was a fairly cool breeze, not hot like a blast furnace. August is approaching and that could mean shorter days already! We hope the upcoming weather will be cooperative. Rummage Sales are planned in Hosmer on Saturday and then in Ipswich on August 6. Then fall athletes will be heading out as practice begins soon....
As you possibly suspect, our climate is comprised of a lot of extremes to make the final averages. And apparently what you might not know, our best most perfect average day of the entire year will be July 24. Yes, that data would be correct according to our South Dakota historical weather data over a 36-year period. Factoring into that will be the date with the most predicted sunshine and the date with the best temperature and also including the longest day of the year in our state. So since it is also a weekend, July 24 will offer South...
The new spillway at Mina Lake couldn’t have been finished at a more opportune time. Just think how many cubic feet of water have already gone over the dam since then. Mr. Parmley would have certainly been impressed! The Dedication of the New Parmley Dam Spillway was scheduled for Saturday, July 16. But that has been rescheduled. Due to the high water level there was a “no wake zone” imposed. That has been cancelled. But many around the lake may still have docks and equipment still under water. So be respectful of them....
Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink as the old saying goes. We have really gotten a lot of 2022 precipitation in Ipswich in only two or three weather systems. The rest of the time we've been happy for any precip. we could get. Especially when we have had those heat spells from time to time! The official weather guy in Ipwich Marv Seyer said that he got 2.8" from the storm. (Leland from Roscoe had about the same.) And some of that sure sounded like hail, but I don't believe that lasted too long in our location anyway. Anyway there...
I really don't know what to say here today, other than the usual be careful with fireworks. Also keep yourself cool when you are outside or away from your air conditioners for very long. Our next paper will be on July 6 well after the Fourth of July smoke has cleared and already well into July. Hasn't June gone by rather quickly as it usual seems to do. And we could again remind you that our deadline for material for that July 6 publication will be this Friday at 2 p.m. Now that Trail Days are over, there are still some area towns with some...

June is passing by rather quickly again this year, as it always seems to do. And that's despite a fact that we had already mentioned regarding the weekly newspaper business. If you look at a June calendar, you will indeed notice that this month has five Wednesdays, starting on June 1 and ending with the June 29 editions. But that of course means that the first Wednesday in July will be July 6. So being that the Fourth will be on the preceding Monday, a holiday, we will need to have an early deadline for the July 6 newspaper material, which...
Wow! Have we been having some storms around the area lately. For instance early Tuesday morning a thunderstorm moved through the area, causing a limited outage in the north side of Ipswich after having caused some tree and structural damage in the Roscoe area. But the outage was in our home neighborhood and we didn't realize that the office still had power. So we were pleased to be able to continue publishing the papers as usual on Tuesday, while the MDU guys would hopefully get our house up and running with electricity. Then enjoy Trail Days...
Two recent “special” events were Donut Day and 605 Day. The latter on June 5 was unique to our state because it is our telephone system Area Code and one of the few states that have the same area code all across the entire state. I don't know and maybe you do — do our neighbors to the north have all the same area code (701)? Something to look up on the internet, I guess! The South Dakota Department of Tourism encouraged local businesses, chambers of commerce and unique South Dakota tourist attractions to get involved with their own speci...
This was one State B track and field meet that probably didn't require the 4x400 results in either the girls or boys outcomes last weekend in Sioux Falls. And how about the LRC, the girls from Northwestern were second only to Colman-Egan 99 to 48 and a LRC boys member Ipswich was able to finish second only to Chester Area 86 to 45. I would think that the Colman-Egan girls and Chester Area boys were probably both favored to win their respective divisions and they would do exactly that. And I'm guessing that since the Chester Area girls were...
t's starting to dry up just a little around the edges and I don't think anybody will complain if and when it does exactly that. But the most recent weather systems have maybe combined for less than an inch and again, I won't complain. Track fans around the state will be pouring into Sioux Falls, including our area teams, so again good luck to our thinclads and also to the upcoming high school state qualifying golfers! Remember - Monday is Memorial Day. You need to get your items for the newspapers in by 4 p.m. on Friday. Our office will be...
To the citizens of Edmunds County, Jonathan Waldner is currently employed by the Sturgis Police Department as a “Special Officer” during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Jonathan has worked the Rally for the last seven years and has been an integral member of the Bar Team for the last two years. As a Bar Team member, you meet all kinds of people who are attending the Rally and I have high demands of this team being professional with everyone they encounter since they represent the Sturgis Police Department. As his supervisor I have observed...
It definitely is that time of the year. The Ipswich graduation was last Saturday and the Edmunds Central graduation will be this Saturday afternoon. But it’s also nearly time for the post-season high school spring sports play-offs and the last one of their varsity careers for the seniors. We dodged a bullet by not experiencing those massive storms that hit the southern portions of our state last week and hopefully the weather will cooperative for our golfers and track and field thinclads. So good luck to our high school sports participants w...
