It's the merry month of May and really can't believe that the school year is almost over, as well. But May is one of our busiest months if not the very busiest, rivaling December for sure! Those dandelions should be more than happy, unless they happened to be covered with standing water. Here is hoping that your sump pumps are holding up under the strain and would not hurt to have a spare just in case. And whatever we said about water water everywhere but not a drop to drink wouldn't be true. There is water every where but I wouldn't advise...

To the Citizens of Edmunds County: It has been my good fortune to have known Jonathan Waldner for over 15 years. During that time I have known him to be a honest and moral person who takes pride in his work and cares about those he serves. He is well-trained and more than qualified to lead the Edmunds County Sheriffs Office. I am positive that he will serve the people of Edmunds County with distinction, candor, and compassion. I ask that you vote for Jonathan in the upcoming election. He is the best and only man for Edmunds County Sheriff! -...

Remember it’s South Dakota when the climate or weather can change almost overnight. And it did exactly that last weekend. We went from being too dry to seeing the creeks running. Amazing! And let’s hope it doesn’t take that long for the next weather system to approach our area and maybe a little less wind. Friday is Arbor Day and you all know what that means — go plant a tree. Then water it on May Day. The first week of May is full of special days according to our SDPB calendar. May 3 is National Teacher Appreciation Day. Thanks Teacher...

It’s that time of the year — time for outdoor sports events and two of them are planned for Saturday in Ipswich. That’s right, both high school golf at Split Rock and track and field events on the new track surface. It’s a fast track, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a meet record or two being set on Saturday. Maybe our unending wind may help in some cases. Even the jumping event runways are excellent, so if you are a track and field fan, come out and see for yourself. We could probably mention the same regarding the golf course! U...

Our April showers in whatever form they happen to occur will hopefully lead to some May dandelions if nothing else. (You know the old saying that April showers lead to May flowers.) I'm not sure if that is exactly right but paraphrased. And in the meantime the precip .should help alleviate the wildfire danger for a while at least. This time of year the weather can and does change quite quickly. And it is indeed Holy Week, so Happy Easter, everybody!...

Well the college basketball drama is finally over for another year. And what a year it has been! We need to congratulate one more area team. That’s right, the SDSU women for winning the NIT. And that accomplishment will hopefully lead to even more success in their program next season. But now the March craziness will lead to the long, drawn-out NBA playoffs. And although alot of people might not follow the NBA these days, it is basketball. If you chose to watch the whole thing, that’s up to you. Not a fan? If the never-ending wind would end...

To the Editor: I am Jonathan Waldner. I would appreciate your vote for Edmunds County Sheriff. I was born and raised in rural Stratford, on a Hutterite Colony where I attended school. Soon after, I moved to Aberdeen, and began working construction. Years later, I transitioned my career to the oil fields in North Dakota. In 2007, I began working at the Brown County Jail as a correction officer. This is when I found my calling in law enforcement. In 2008, I became a deputy sheriff for Spink County and graduated from the South Dakota Law...

As is usually true this time of the year, there are no Cinderellas left in the NCAA basketball drama! Just some very familiar faces. The South Dakota Coyotes and Creighton have dropped out of further contention on the women’s side, as did St. Peters in the men’s showdown. In fact, North Carolina and Duke will indeed be facing each other as I understand. With Duke being coached by the legendary Coach K, who may be retiring. The other men’s advancers into the Final Four will be Kansas and Villanova. The USD women lost a nailbiter to Michi...

Spring has officially sprung and so have the USD women — right into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. I think their next opponent will be Michigan on Saturday in Wichita, Kan. That’s right the Coyotes for the first time in their program history came away with back-to-back upsets of Ole Miss and Baylor. The Baylor Bears certainly don’t enjoy losing on their own court. So good luck to the Coyotes. Meanwhile the SDSU women, not making the NCAA event as an at-large team, are going to the women’s NIT Tourney and gaining valuable experie...

March is moving along quite quickly for being a 31-day month. This week we will apparently have celebrated two notable days, Pi Day on Monday and of course St. Patrick's Day on March 17, as it always is. And while you are busy looking at your calendar or more importantly your clocks Sunday was an important day because of the 2 a.m. time change that morning. Next week will start with another important day. Sunday is the first day of Spring! (We hope it will be exactly that.) In case you are wondering about Pi Day, Pi is a mathematical numerical...

It is time to talk a little basketball! The State B girls tourney will be played in Watertown this weekend. It is somewhat unique this year, because both defending champions are in the tourney. You ask how can that be? Well, Aberdeen Roncalli won the State A last year and is stepping down to Class B this year, while White River actually won the B last year, upsetting Castlewood in the championship game, if memory serves. And the White River girls will indeed be back to defend their 2021 State B title. It won't be easy, but White River is...

Ipswich/Bowdle scored nine team points in the State B Wrestling standings in Sioux Falls last weekend. The Tigers were led by Tanner Frickson, a sixth place finisher and Brady Unser also scored a point. Kadyn Weisser also wrestled for I/B there but did not place. So the post-season is now well underway even with those initial girls basketball region results delayed by the storm last week. And we’ll hope any nasty weather holds off. There were probably an upset or two in the girls’ regional tourneys. This week the boys region is underway. And...

What is that white stuff blowing around for a change, I'm certainly not confusing it with flour escaping from a bakery window. But it wasn't very many days ago when that stuff in the air was dust colored because that's exactly what we were experiencing, blowing dust just like that old song Dust in the Wind by the band Kansas. How quickly the weather can change this time of the year, especially when we're now getting into the midst of our post-season athletic events. Especially when our weather has already had a history all winter of going from...

It finally is that time of the year. Time for the various high school sports’ post-season to begin, starting with wrestling this Saturday. Girls basketball regions are next week, beginning on Monday. Especially now that the Super Bowl is finally over, the winter sports will be history as well. That is indeed how time flies. So good luck to all the area high school athletes in each of their respective sports. Hopefully a lot of games will go right down to the last possession, just like the Super Bowl did. There seemed to be a lot of parity in t...

The winter sports playoffs are right around the corner and that could probably even be said for the college teams. Time flies, that is for sure! And don't forget the NFL's professional football action which has now boiled down to two remaining survivors headed for Sunday's Super Bowl showdown, the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. But the weather can traditionally change back into winter when the high school post-season events are in progress. And as dry as it has lately been, let's...

Today Wednesday, February 2 (when you might be reading this) is 2/2/22. That surely is a whole lot of twos to have to deal with in one day. But those of you who occasionally press down on your number keys too hard and too long will be happy that you not so accidentally ended up with 2222 on your computer or phone screen during your texting and emailing, etc. There used to be a 1/1/11 for instance but that was getting to be quite a long time ago. And I bet you can hardly wait until 3/3/33 finally arrives. Speaking of 33, I understand that it has...

Next Wednesday, Feb. 2, is Groundhog Day. So you all can be looking forward to that. I'm predicting that this year the Groundhog will be more confused than ever before, because our winter weather keeps going from one extreme to the other and back again. Has it been like that all over the good old USA? I'm guessing even more unpredictable! And unprecedented weather events from what I have been hearing. I saw on one of our calendars that Monday, Jan. 24 was “World Belly Laugh Day.” I’m sorry I missed it. We could all use a good laugh...

There is really no such thing as a January thaw anymore due to climate change or whatever. At least not in the traditional sense of a very long cold spell with finally a much welcomed late January thaw. If you were even lucky to experience that! But our weather temperatures have been more like a roller coast ride with frequent ups and downs. And that we haven't had a whole lot of precip. so far this winter in our immediate neck of the woods. We just get enough of the white stuff to be a nuisance, at least for now anyway. Be it in whatever...

The second 2022 federal holiday is rapidly approaching. And that would indeed be Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I am assuming that our office will be open, but it is indeed a holiday for some schools and offices as well. That Monday, January 17 will be the second January 2022 holiday, because New Year's Day was obviously the first holiday of the New Year and can be easy to overlook for that very reason, especially since it was a Saturday! There won't be any mail on January 17 from the Post Office. So if you are intending to send us written...

It is the new year! Have you come up with any resolutions for 2022? A good New Years Resolution for a small office would be that you would resolve that you won't be calling or live chatting or even e-mailing a software company for advice. Hey, we already broke that resolution regarding our desk top publishing software. It would take all day Sunday and over half the day on Monday before we could actually reach a real person in their office (in another country) who could actually tell us what to do, still hopefully with enough time to actually...

Winter has finally arrived, both on calendars and your thermometers. And your outdoor windows for that matter! This winter season is indeed underway and then some with some below 0° temperatures. But one of the things still left in December would of course be New Years Eve, December 31, the last day of the month and now the entire year. This year indeed seemed to move along really fast, as it approaches Friday evening, Dec. 31 at around midnight. So enjoy what's left of this holiday season! And you still have time to make a News Years...

Was the winter solstice on December 21 this year? It seems like I had heard that somewhere. That did seem a little early, but maybe not. At any rate it might be quite a long time until we begin to actually experience the effects of the longest day of the year. Somewhere I also heard that there was less than a minute more daylight right away, so you indeed shouldn't notice that for awhile. But time flies when you're having fun or getting older and I would imagine that could be scientifically proven. Especially if it's in the form of a phone app....
