Winter has finally arrived, both on calendars and your thermometers. And your outdoor windows for that matter! This winter season is indeed underway and then some with some below 0° temperatures. But one of the things still left in December would of course be New Years Eve, December 31, the last day of the month and now the entire year. This year indeed seemed to move along really fast, as it approaches Friday evening, Dec. 31 at around midnight. So enjoy what's left of this holiday season! And you still have time to make a News Years...
Was the winter solstice on December 21 this year? It seems like I had heard that somewhere. That did seem a little early, but maybe not. At any rate it might be quite a long time until we begin to actually experience the effects of the longest day of the year. Somewhere I also heard that there was less than a minute more daylight right away, so you indeed shouldn't notice that for awhile. But time flies when you're having fun or getting older and I would imagine that could be scientifically proven. Especially if it's in the form of a phone app....

You guys will all need to spend extra time in a gym or fitness center after all that awesome food available during the Ipswich Hometown Holiday Weekend. There was a variety of treats to say the least. And there will be more treats at the Roscoe Open House on Friday, Dec. 17 But fortunately for a while at least it hasn't been that bad outside to work out. Especially in the afternoon, but it gets dark so fast in the late afternoon. But it won't be much longer now until we are past the shortest daylight in the year, meaning of course the first...
The Ipswich girls and the North Central girls basketball teams had an early common opponent the Sully Buttes Chargers. (Their girls are still coached by veteran coach Mark Seftner.) Ipswich was to open its season vs. the Charger girls on December 7 in the Tiger Den. The Thunder girls will play the Chargers on Friday, Dec. 10 in Onida. Another interesting fact is that the Thunder and Ipswich will tangle on December 14 in a girls/boys format in Ipswich. Meanwhile the Tiger boys are to go on the road to visit Waubay/Summit on December 11 and the...
An apparent result of global climate change is that our weather seems to go from one extreme to the other. We noticed that with all the rain in October, but hardly any rain (or snow) in November which also ended up to be quite warmer than usual. And that trend seems to be carrying over into December. But that can all change and probably will. But enjoy our pleasant weather while it lasts. I guess it must already be allowing people to get their outdoor decorations changed over from Halloween and/or Thanksgiving. It has been ideal for that. If...
How about the Class B girls’ volleyball outcome? It was indeed well represented by the three LRC teams of the eight total. Well represented might be a little bit of a understatement, because Warner won it going 3-0 and the other LRC teams (Faulkton and Aberdeen Christian) each won at least one game there. Faulkton actually placed fourth after winning its opening match over a perennially-solid contender, Arlington. One of Faulkton’s losses was actually to Warner 3-1 in the semis. Over in Class A Sioux Falls Christian prevailed. Some of their hit...
It is indeed that time of the year in high school sports around the state. The football state events were last weekend in Vermillion at the DakotaDome. And has been the case all too often in recent years the teams from the southern part of the state seem to dominate the results. And unfortunately that proved to be true again this year. Two nine-man area teams were defeated at the Dome! Class 9B Potter County went down in two overtimes 44-42 to Dell Rapids St. Mary and Class 9A Herreid/Selby Area sustained a 55-18 setback to Howard. There was...
I don’t know about you, but I certainly had trouble adjusting to the new time on the first day at work, especially the afternoon. Afternoons are long enough to begin wth and this one was particulary long. I hadn’t looked at the clock that many times since I was in school. Speaking of school. The IHS Class of 1965 lost another member — journalist/newspaper man, Ed Engler. We spent time with him a few years ago. He will certainly be missed. His obituary can be found in this week’s paper....
The long month of October is finally over and that might have been the end of the precipitation at least for a while. How much in everybody’s gauge probably varied somewhat from gauge to gauge. The moisture had started back in September already, so it would be interesting to add September and October together to see how wet those two months compare in the record books....
5 Legislative Summer Study concludes As the 2021 legislative session came to a close, I was appointed Chair of the Marijuana Summer Study. We met many times over the summer and learned a lot about marijuana, both its benefits, as well as its concerns. As a reminder, South Dakota voters legalized medical marijuana through an initiated measure, and adult use (recreational) through a constitutional amendment. Constitutional Amendment A is being challenged, and is currently in the Supreme Court awaiting an opinion on the single topic rule. Both...
The next round of the high school football playoff is this Thursday, Oct. 28. And that means that Ipswich will be hosting Canistota/Freeman. So good luck to the Tigers. Hopefully the weather will improve. The Lake Region Conference, of which both Ipswich and North Central are members, qualified each and every team for the playoffs this year, including both Ipswich and North Central. Good job! Also good luck in the Region 2B volleyball tourney scheduled for next week. Tena enjoys watching the South Dakota All-State Chorus and Orchestra on...

It really is that time of year!. Good luck to our area football teams on Thursday in their respective games. Also to our area cross country runners on Saturday in Sioux Falls. These athletes are all running on mostly grass (both in football and cross country). And that green stuff really likes all the rain its been getting lately. Unfortunately that necessitates more frequent mowing especially with the tree leaves beginning to fall quite rapidly now as well. But we should also wish the volleyball netters luck as well, as their post-season is...
Lately, the old expression “When it rains, it pours” has been the case with a good old-fashioned cloudburst or two. The forecasting science has improved so much that the weather experts are confident enough to say the L-word (likely) rain several days in advance or at least a 90% chance. Fortunately, it hadn’t snowed yet this year in our neck of the woods. But that’s probably only a matter of when, not if. But then who even knows if our fall and winter temperatures will be affected by global warming. We’ll just hope it’s not the F-word (fre...
Your calendar displays one of those up-coming Monday federal holidays, whatever you choose to name it. So here is the deal, our office will actually still be open on Monday, but there will be an early deadline on Friday for the materials to be placed in next Wednesday's editions of our newspapers, especially items that you mail. And in the meantime enjoy the beautiful weather while it lasts. Today on Wednesday, October 6, there will be cross country runners enjoying the weather with their respective conference meets. Ipswich is hosting the LRC...
When I was growing up, there were a lot of things I could count on: more than one Rounds brother to a bedroom, a prayer before meals and a local newspaper in the house. I learned early on the local newspaper was not only a source of information, but also a source of income. One of my first jobs as a kid was delivering the Minneapolis Tribune. When I got my driver’s license, I began distributing papers to the other paperboys. That job required me to be up at 4 AM to meet the truck that would drop off the papers. Those were some early mornings an...
It is getting to be that time of the year for the fall sports seasons and believe it or not the post-season events are right around the corner. And that can mean less than desirable weather, but who knows about this year's weather, summer has definitely decided to return for now at least. The sports schedules will sometimes include a Monday event during the regular season and we most likely will hold these until the following week's editions due to time and space deadlines. And that keeps our printers happy, as well. This Monday was one of...
Everybody is Irish on three days and that one of them would obviously be March 17 on your calendars. The other two days? That would have been September 18th and 19th during the annual Northeast South Dakota Celtic Faire held at the Richmond Lake's Youth Camp. And what a beautiful two days of weather at a beautiful location! This event was actually canceled last year due to the pandemic, but the organizers really did their job to make up for it. The food and live music were awesome both days. And as you recall the next day's weather was not all...
TWINS WIN! Baseball news? No Homecoming! It’s homecoming week in both schools — Ipswich and Edmunds Central. And both had twins in their royalty candidates. Claire and Emma Beyers, Edmunds Central seniors, and Holly and Kirsten Anderson, Ipswich seniors. Congratulations to Queens and Kings Emma Beyers and Colton Mohr at Edmunds Central and Kirsten Anderson and Carson Gohl at Ipswich. So enjoy! And we’ll hope that its not too rainy for the outdoor activities. The homecoming parades are Friday afternoon in Roscoe and Ipswich at 1 p.m. There...
When it rains it finally pours and worse with some areas of wind and damaging hail. This has been true lately especially in South Dakota where the weather can go from one extreme to the other in a matter of hours. We’ll see if we will be getting another storm system later this week. It is the beginning of the long Labor Day weekend. The deadline for our newspaper will be on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. Whether you plan to barbecue on Labor Day, Sept. 6 — or celebrate the more eccentric Barbecue Your Breakfast Day on Sept. 4 — outdoor grill...
Disaster Assistance for 2021 Livestock Forage Losses Producers in Edmunds County are eligible to apply for 2021 Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP) benefits on small grain, native pasture, forage sorghum and improved pasture. LFP provides compensation if you suffer grazing losses for covered livestock due to drought on privately owned or cash leased land or fire on federally managed land. County committees can only accept LFP applications after notification is received by the National Office of qualifying drought or if a federal agency proh...
I guess that the Brown County fairgrounds indeed received some rain during the fair, especially on Sunday. But as the case with thunderstorms they can and do produce some adverse effects and this time it turned out to be really strong wind gusts that apparently caused some damage there. We were actually waiting until Sunday to attend the fair and after hearing all the weather reports we decided not to make the trip east and that was probably quite a good idea. And we got more thunder and lightning over night on Sunday into Monday along with som...
It’s fair week and doesn’t it always rain during the Brown County Fair? Let’s indeed hope that is the case to help alleviate our on-going drought. We’ve had some recent southeasterly wind (for a change), and that frequently blows up something as well. Maybe the southern parts of S.D. have been faring somewhat better with more timely rains because it does appear to be somewhat greener around the countryside. Those tropical storms can sometimes open up the Gulf moisture even up here. At least it may be somewhat cooler for a while. Tena’s...
Guess what? If you listen closely you can hear the sounds of the various high school sports pre-season practices. There's not much louder that a thunderous volleyball spike and cross country running is often accompanied by the sounds of a coaches voice offering advice and encouragement. Football has its own set of sounds, especially during the conditioning drills. And Thunder is even the nickname of one area sports co-op teams who are probably along with their parents hoping for some real thunder as it still remains rather dry in our area. And...
