It's nearly March and you all remember the old saying about March, if it comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. We can all hope that is true this year in particular. Because March looks like it could be coming in rather chilly and blustery to say the least. I won't even mention the S word or the W M words or even the F R words, just being this cold is bad enough. OK, I will mention them — snow, wintry mix and freezing rain. It might be a while before you trade your snow blower for a lawn mower, but that grass might be doing s...
We are so dependent on the internet. We certainly take it for granted until it's off. Then suddenly it's the big question that pops into mind "What are we going to do now without it? " Something we've grown accustomed to as a necessity now days for instance is a cash register card reader. You guessed it, it's certainly dependent upon the internet as we found out for awhile on Monday. And how were going to get our newspapers emailed on Tuesday was the next big question, but fortunately the internet provider problem didn't last into Tuesday! We...
Two former Ipswich girls' track and field stars represented their respective university teams at an indoor invite at SDSU last weekend in Brookings. Macy Heinz runs for the University of South Dakota as a sophomore and Tori Moore is a Black Hills State University senior. The University of South Dakota won the women’s 4x400-meter relay to cap off the meet Saturday evening. That quartet consisted of sophomore Danielle Thompson, junior Ellie Wilson, sophomore Macy Heinz and senior Mallory Fine, clocked 3:52.54. Heinz had dropped another two s...
This has become an old-fashioned winter in several aspects, so hopefully that type of winter won't wreak havoc with the post-season sports event schedules. That all starts with the Tigers' regional wrestling tournament set for February 16 in Redfield. The girls' and boys' basketball regionals are right around the corner, as well. And as of our newspaper deadline, Ipswich was narrowly holding on to the top-seed ranking in the girls' region with Faulkton narrowly in second. Each of those teams had a 11-3 record going into this week's action. And...
That was certainly a dry snow over the weekend. The moisture content wasn't quite what you would want to build a snowman with, but on the other hand the drifts were dry and hard so they were nearly ideal for snow bricks for snow forts and they even had dirt mixed in to re-enforce them even further. But you might not want to stay outside very long, building snow forts or snowmen until it gets a little warmer. And the weekend weather sounds like it could bring warmer temperatures to this region of the country. In the meantime, stay warm inside...
It's a little too early to be thinking of that groundhog! Or is it? It seems like he hardly ever sees his shadow these days, because it's either foggy, drizzling, sleeting, snowing (flurries or more), raining (including freezing rain or freezing drizzle), or just plain cloudy. Or all of the above! So that makes you think that there could possibly be more winter in store for that groundhog (and us)! We had our January thaw earlier in the month and have been paying for that lately. And the snow is starting to pile up a bit and if we get any at...
Congratulations to the Ipswich Snow Queen Aleah Steger who was crowned the 2019 State Snow Queen at a program last Saturday in Aberdeen. That is surely an honor and highlight for the community. Ipswich native Randy Grismer was revealed as Frosty during the Snow Queen event. And just in time for possible snow later in the week. They have indeed been talking about an upcoming weather change, but hopefully the real nasty stuff will stay to the south of our local area. Remember the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday holiday on Monday, Jan. 21. If you...
Our winter weather certainly goes from one extreme to the other, but we haven't had a whole lot of -20 degree weather yet this season, so those extremes that are averaged out just might be raising our averages at least a tiny bit. And we got rid of quite a bit of that snow, at least around the countryside and even on our driveway. So all that is left are some bigger drifts and ice, where the snow melted in the afternoons and re-freezes overnight. There are quite a few events around the area. And they're not all athletic competitions! For...
Our wintry weather played havoc with activities around the eastern half of the state at least, including many high school sporting events that will be pending regarding their re-scheduling. We celebrated Christmas with Tena’s family. Niece Emily, in the Navy in California, showed up to surprise her Mom in Canton. And we made it back home before the precip. began. We found out it was difficult to find a place for supper on Christmas day, until we stopped in the Summit C-store. That was like an oasis in the desert. Last week our printers went t...
Another quick reminder — our deadline for the Jan. 2 edition will be Friday at noon, as we will print on Saturday. But it won’t actually be mailed until Wednesday, Jan. 2. So have a Happy New Year and don’t be too hard on yourself when (and not if) you break that first New Year’s resolution. You probably notice that you are reading this on Thursday not Wednesday. We had a miscommunication with the printer, so this week’s paper was actually printed on Wednesday morning. Tuesday holidays are tough. Hope your’s was enjoyable!...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And Santa did come early with a few presents for at least some of the area high school sports teams. Particularly in basketball, where the EC girls and boys and Ipswich's girls and boys all have at least one win under their belts. And the Tiger boys have three pre-Christmas wins under their Christmas tree to lead that list. As we stated in this column last week, most of the local area with the exception of Hosmer customers would be getting their next week's paper and the following week's edition on December...
This is indeed a busy time of the year. We will be publishing our Ipswich Tribune and Roscoe-Hosmer Independent Christmas editions on December 19. As in prior years, will be contacting some area businesses for potential advertising in these editions and please call or email if you would like an ad in the upcoming edition and we haven't yet contacted you. Our deadline for news and ad info for those papers will be Monday, Dec. 17 at noon. After that, though, things get even more hectic for our printers, due to Christmas and New Years Day both...
Last Friday was the Roscoe Commercial Club's Christmas promo and this weekend will be the Ipswich Commercial Club's turn to celebrate the holidays December 6-8. They used to refer to it as Santa Day, but it has recently evolved into quite a bit more than that with myriad individual ideas from area businesses and organizations. And now it's more than just one day! The weather has gotten a little more wintry lately, but hopefully decent enough to get outdoors and get those last minute lights and decorations if you spell procrastinator with a...
The holiday season officially got underway with a long Thanksgiving weekend, culminated by that sell-out Medora concert Sunday in the Ipswich School Theater, sponsored by the Ipswich American Legion post as a fundraiser. So many of us are probably still eating leftover turkey sandwiches but with various memories of the event still fresh in our memories. November will close out with things like an Edmunds Central school play, the Friday local business promotion day in Roscoe and then the Mike Williams benefit also on Friday at the Father...
So far in South Dakota, 2018 has been an interesting weather year, with some extremes in the mix to make up the yearly averages. But we have so much to be thankful for that our weather hasn't gone to the extremes experienced in Florida and California for example, that produce deadly hurricanes or brush fires over wide-spread acreages that consume everything in their way. Including human life! So Happy Thanksgiving and also Black Friday, if you're into that. This year there seems to be some other type of marketing promotion for every day of the...
Well, it's been unbelievably chilly for this time of the year, down right cold with even colder wind chills. Fortunately November's moisture so far hasn't produced any permanent snow cover. But there's plenty of time for that stuff later this month or better yet in December. It also sounds like winter is right around the corner with basketballs replacing footballs and volleyballs (we've even attended a college game or two). But for three area Class B high school volleyball teams, Northwestern, Warner and Faulkton, all out of the Lake Region...
You can't say that the high school fall sports teams in our neck of the woods didn't have a solid schedule. Ipswich/EC faced and was defeated by Kimball/White Lake during the regular season and now that team will be in the Class 9AA playoffs' championship game with an 8-3 mark against Bon Homme (10-1). That confrontation in the Dome at Vermilion starts at 1 p.m. on Thursday. But before that, the entire weekend in the Dome will kick off with a 10 a.m. Thursday 9A game and that's the class that Ipswich/Edmunds Central was in this year. And the...
Vote your conscience on November 6, no matter the particular race or ballot issue and that's the best way you can live with the outcomes however they turn out! Sometimes you might be wondering if your vote even matters and in a particularly close race it most certainly would. But it's always important to vote, especially during a presidential off-year. Meanwhile, the Lake Region Conference football teams still alive in the nine-man playoffs are down to one -- Faulkton. And there is also one Yellowstone Trail Conference team still practicing...
Congratulations to the Ipswich girls' cross country team for their second-place finish at the State B in Sioux Falls last Saturday. They were led by senior Aleah Steger and junior Tessa Kilber, both individual Top 25 medalist. Maxwell Geditz also attained that Top 25 status as the lone IHS boy in the state event. (Senior Ben Kulesa was unable to compete due to an ankle injury.) Meanwhile the Tigers football team lost their play-off bid to Canistota-Freeman last Thursday in Freeman. But it was good experience, because even though they graduate...
Our Pets/Our Responsibility We are in the fall season and the foliage is really changing across the county. I wanted to take this time to visit with all residents of Edmunds County about our pets. This seems like a topic that the Sheriff of your county wouldn't need to speak about. We have had some issues arise in the county involving pets. We all love to have our dogs, cats, horses or what ever type of animal you have as a pet by our sides for our enjoyment. It comes with a great responsibility to maintain the health of those animals. We all g...
The Lake Region Conference is furnishing no fewer than five football teams, including Ipswich-Edmunds Central in 9A for the upcoming high school football playoffs. There is one LRC 9AA team, North Border, which travels to Webster Area on Thursday and two LRC teams in 9A, Warner and I-EC. They don't meet in the first round. Ipswich plays Canistota-Freeman in Freeman. and Warner hosts Clark-Willow Lake. But that's not the case in 9B, the smallest nine-man class. It will feature two LRC teams going head to head, Langford Area vs. Faulkton Area in...
This is National Newspaper Week. Newspapers have truly been under siege the past year on many different levels. Enuff said about that! It’s also the beginning of the post-season in high school fall sports so good luck to the area cross country runners who were scheduled to run today (Oct. 10) in the regional meet in Gettysburg. And also good luck to yes, the I-EC football team which has apparently made the playoffs starting on Oct. 18 somewhere. And last, but not least, good luck to the area netters!...
Once again it's homecoming week and this time at Edmunds Central. Congrats to the homecoming King and Queen — Elliot and Kendra and also to your royal court. And enjoy all the homecoming events, because your high school years fly by quickly. (We're always looking at a program or a list with somebody shown as a senior and going that can't be right, but it is!) Hopefully the weather will cooperate — now that some people got as much rain recently as they had all during the growing season. Especially during the outdoor events like the lunch, par...
This is homecoming week in Ipswich and next week at Edmunds Central, so good luck in all your homecoming activities in both instances. The IHS senior royalty crowned on Monday were Queen Kamryn Heinz and King Ben Kulesa. And Edmunds Central will reveal its own homecoming royalty identities during a coronation program on Sunday evening. Of course that could mean a parade or two in the next couple of weeks. Or actually three, counting the NSU Gypsy Day parade! We hear drum cadences outside the back door of our office so I imagine that bands are...
Yesterday was Patriot Day, as you are beginning to see in print on a lot of September calendars. And no it's not homecoming for Hitchcock-Tulare or Eureka/Bowdle. That's because Patriot Day has become the name for the 9-ll attacks on American soil and the Governor had asked South Dakotans to fly their flag at half mast in memory of the casualties. Patriot Day does seem to be evolving into a true holiday observance, similar to Veterans Day and Memorial Day and probably should. That's because the aftermath of the 9/11 attack has become an...
