Thanks to our entire South Dakota Congressional delegation Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune and our lone House of Representatives delegate Kristi Noem and also the help of the National Newspaper Association, the tariff on newsprint has apparently been lifted. And that was certainly good news to newspapers, the ones that were able to sustain themselves through the crisis. It was especially significant that the news broke just before the Labor Day holiday weekend, so newspaper staffs definitely had an extra reason to celebrate the holiday....
Did you notice the red planet in the vicinity of an orange full moon in the southeastern sky over the past weekend? You could indeed see Mars really well with the naked eye (even with our aging eyes). And when people are actually preparing and planning to go there some day, that makes the viewing more enjoyable. Of course, you can see some other planets right now, as well in other corners of the evening sky, if not still a meteor or two. It all has made the night sky quite interesting during the month of August that's now nearly completed. I...
The varsity football team got off on the right foot with a win last Friday and hopefully our area netters and cross country runners will do likewise later this week. As well as the football team in its Friday evening Lake Region Conference appearance at Northwestern! Edmunds Central is actually hosting this year's Yellowstone Trail Conference volleyball tourney on Saturday. And as you read this, school will be in session for the 2018-19 school year, interrupted just a little by the big upcoming Labor Day weekend. We will have an early deadline...
This is Brown County Fair week and you all know what that means, next week is back-to-school week. And a school-related extracurricular activity already begins later this week — a football game with Ipswich-Edmunds Central hosting Tiospaye Zina on Friday evening. (Good Luck, Tigers!) Friday is also one of those Brown County Fair concert nights, so that attendance might be a little sparse compared to the rest of their evening events. But some area football teams might have this week as their bye-week so wouldn't open their season until the f...
High school sports pre-season practices are getting underway this week and you athletes might be tired after a long practice session. You can rest up in the evenings and overnight. But this weekend is also expected to be the optimal time to view the annual Perseid meteor showers during the late evening/night-time hours! So you could recoup a little energy by lying on your back in a dark rural location away from the city lights. That's what some Perseids Shower experts recommend for seeing the most sky at night. Hopefully you players won't be...
Where has July gone? Summer is moving along as fast as it always has and maybe even more so this year. I've already seen some Halloween, Thanskgiving and Christmas items in at least one store or another. And I guess that shouldn't be at all surprising. Especially in those stores that are going out of business. They surely know how to organize these clearance sales and sometimes even bring in brand new stuff from somewhere else on a daily basis. And customers seem to go for it, if you notice the increased foot traffic each day. We were able to...
If you didn't see (or hear) any fireworks earlier this month, you could get another opportunity. There will be a fireworks display at the football field in Ipswich at around midnight Friday evening as the conclusion of the Relay for Life cancer-battling activities. Things get going there around 6 p.m. for the six-hour event. Before Friday, though, we might have some natural fireworks from thunderstorm activities as part of a possible midweek weather event that had been forecast. It's getting uncomfortably too close to fall already, but in our...
Where has the summer gone? July is almost half over already and we're heading downhill fast towards the holiday season. But before that we'll have an election and there are some interesting races shaping up, even though it is a non-presidential year. In the meantime, Christmas in July has become a promotion that seems to get bigger every year. The networks show Christmas movies and stores are attempting to rival Black Friday with some of their July bargains. We went from red, white and blue to red, white and green and then the eventual New...
I’m sure we might not all agree, but June went by way to fast again this year the way it always does. At least July will be a 31-day month! Speaking of July, enjoy a safe Fourth of July week. Yes, with this newspaper edition sent to the publishers on Monday, July 2 instead of Tuesday, July 3 as would be the usual procedure and Wednesday, July 4 being right in the middle of a normal work week, I would imagine that a lot of people might avail themselves of the opportunity to travel somewhere the rest of the week and even into the upcoming w...
Friday, June 29 is the deadline day for next week's paper, as the plans are that we will be mailing it a day earlier on Tuesday, July 3, not Wednesday, July 4. Friday is also National Camera Day, which I bet you really didn't know! I certainly didn't! But photography and cameras have evolved so much and are essentially integrated into day-to-day life in this social-media digital age. Everybody can be photographers. And it's wonderful that cameras haven't totally disappeared like some other aspects of history, though you might not always...
Our local newspapers play an important role in educating the public and bringing communities together. They are the beating hearts of our towns and cities in South Dakota. We rely on them for updates on local news, wedding and birth announcements, sports, upcoming events and more. Newspapers, especially our local daily or weekly papers, keep us connected to our neighbors and our friends. I recently met with the South Dakota Newspaper Association (SDNA) to talk about a serious issue that local papers are facing right now—tariffs on Canadian n...
There are so many things to do this particular weekend, it's simply unbelievable. And the days will still be quite long to enjoy all the activities, although the very longest day of the year will be on Thursday, June 21. Avid rummagers will enjoy the Ipswich City-Wide Rummage Sale from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday and you would still have time to drive over to Pierre to catch the evening's four concerts that will culminate the June 21-23 Oahe Days Arts and Music Festival. Lance Spears will kick off the evening at 5 p.m., followed by The...
It finally rained over the weekend (sort of still the weekend anyway). And I don't know that Trail Days contributed to that welcomed weather event, because the precip really didn't start until late Sunday evening overnight into Monday morning. Maybe it was all the Sunday morning prayers earlier in the day! Actually Saturday's Trail Days calendar featured just about ideal weather for all three concerts, the Sherwin Linton Concerts downtown during the day and the Trail Days Arena stage in the evening, featuring the Rude band and the Thousand Hors...
Chances are that if you are reading this, you subscribe to a local newspaper. Publications like this play an instrumental role in keeping communities strong and informed. Sadly, many are disappearing from our rural communities, making it increasingly difficult to stay connected with what’s happening within the local school system, around town, and around the state. The ever-increasing cost of production is one of the most common concerns South Dakota’s newspapers raise with me. In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have inc...
This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Robert Kennedy assassination. How time flies! Every June also has a number of organized weekend events around the area and we didn't even make it over to one of them, Fort Sisseton, this past weekend. The next highlight of June, is of course, Ipswich's own Trail Days, June 8-9-10 and there's something to do for everybody. Thank the sponsors when you see them. And maybe Trail Days will even help scare up some rain showers. We could certainly use them! Another Saturday to mark on your June calendar...
Remember when I mentioned all those sports channels devoted to year-round coverage, including numerous re-runs of a certain sport and at a particular level, be it high school, college or pro? I'm considering starting three new ones for tiddly winks, yes high school tiddly winks, college tiddly winks and professional! And on second thought, it will be four new channels, because I should probably consider adding one for senior citizens, who were probably growing up when that particular sport was at the height of its popularity. I even...
