Talk about a January thaw! We went from -40° windchill to over 40° plus air temperatures over the weekend. And then some! There are ice fishing derbys coming up. This weekend the fishing will be on the Roscoe Lake. Don’t fall through the ice whatever you do. And will we have a February thaw? Only time will tell! Or just ask the groundhog this week! Who knows - there must be more than one groundhog in the country. The original — “Phil” can be found in Pennsylvania....

Senate Report by Bryan Breitling Last Day to Introduce New Bills! The upcoming week is the last week of introduction of new bills. As a result, with three days to go, we have 214 House bills and 211 Senate bills introduced, and expect a good number to be introduced this week as well. In Joint Appropriations this third week, we began budget setting for six budget units that have very little change year to year. In addition, we heard budget reports from the Board of Regents (six regental universities and two regental schools), the Board of Tech...

Scrapbooking has evolved from the ones our parents and grandparents would make. They would glue corners and stick in the photos or cards and invitations, etc. Most of the signed cards would display a full name, but not always. We found a couple old books in our home and looked through them Saturday afternoon. One was full of photos collected by my mother and grandmother. Luckily Ruth was good at identifying the subjects in white ink on the black pages. There was her 3-4 grade class in Bowdle and another in Onaka. The other book, much bigger,...

Senate Report by Bryan Breitling The 2024 Legislative Session opened with a frenzy! We are seeing a significant jump on bills flowing through the legislature! This early bill entry and committee processing should alleviate the crossover day pressure. After the second week, there were 127 House bills and 112 Senate bills introduced. In Joint Appropriations this second week, we heard budget reports from the Dept. of Social Services, Dept. of Human Services, Tribal Relations, Unified Judicial System, Bureau of Information Technology, and Dept. of...

The weather has certainly been topsy-turvy across the country lately. Points way way south have been getting our type weather. And vice versa we had been getting their weather. Until last week. I guess that when you average our highs and lows it doesn’t look as bad. The wind chills have been out of control. Unbelievable to say the least. Climate change? It sure does look like it....

Senate Report by Bryan Breitling 2024 Legislative Session Begins! The 2024 Legislative Session opened on Jan 9th with Governor Noem’s State of the State Address, highlighting how our state promotes freedom and small government. This first week, in addition to the Governor’s Address, we heard the State of the Judiciary and the State of the Tribes. The bill process takes time to be scheduled and heard in committee, then passed to the floor. So, there were no bills heard on the Senate floor until Friday. After the first week, there were 97 Hou...

One of the things that you could do during the New Year would be to write a book! Yes, write a book. It might not be as difficult as you might think. You should indeed think about it. And if you go ahead with your ideas, I did read somewhere that over 75 % of Americans actually feel that they do indeed have a story idea that is remaining to be published, be it a novel or a documentary. The latter might not be a bad idea since 2024 is indeed an election year. So it's so much easier to computerize your story now that you won't be using an old...

Wasn't there a lot of information in last week's Tribune? Of course a lot of it was Christmas related which is good! This week's New Year's edition might be hampered a little by that winter storm that they were forecasting. But we hope that won't be the case. It does appear that we very well might see even more of a White Christmas in some areas anyway. You guys can dream up some New Year's Resolutions if you are stranded somewhere. There are a few days left in 2023, do enjoy them while you can. So Happy New Year!...

This column has very often been about weather or sports and this year is no exception. Games (and school) have pretty much allowed to be held thanks to the influence of a weather pattern of El Nino that has mostly produced mild and dry Pacific air instead of Arctic air that prevailed last winter. And annual seasonal holiday related events have mostly been able to be held on schedule so far this year. And our local weather guy Marv Seyer has to be pleased about that. This year we complain when the overnight weather temperature drops below 32 so...

December 2023 As 2023 ends and the 99th South Dakota legislative session is ready to begin January 9, 2024, it seems like a good time for an update. My first year as a South Dakota legislature has been informative, educational, and enjoyable. Serving on the educational committee, I have had a chance to meet many great individuals that have common goals--provide safe and great learning experiences for all ages of students. Since the close of last session, I along with other legislatures have met multiple times with public school officials, home...

I can't believe next week will be our Christmas edition and all that good stuff. So if we haven't contacted you and you would like your info in the paper please call or email or stop by the office. With Christmas and New Year’s Day both on Monday, we will be confused for a few weeks. There definitely will be early deadlines for the next editions. It certainly is a busy time of the year what with all the concerts and games alone. Not to mention all the things that are unique to your particular town. Have fun and stay safe!...

It’s certainly a busy time of the year for sports fans. They can still watch pro and colleges that are still in contention. But you can now see and hear the winter sports results in hockey, basketball and wrestling, to name a few sports. And there are probably more if I think of them right off my head. So be sure to cheer for your favorite teams, especially when and if they are playing each other. So remember to be polite and give the refs a break. They could certainly use it. The weather has certainly been quite agreeable, but we’ll see how...

November is almost over, but not until our November 29 Tribune. Yes, this would be one of those rare five Wednesday months. Really rare because November is also one of those shorter 30-day months! But I hope that you guys had taken some time to be thankful during the Thanksgiving season and probably you still can. That is because you should always be grateful for something all year. And you could start your 2024 New Years Resolutions right now. That way you won’t forget them! Unless you are too busy eating your leftover Turkey. There are p...

Happy Thanksgiving! Yes let’s say that right now. Because I probably shouldn't mention all the shopping stuff that you could do the rest of the weekend. But enjoy all those great bargains that you will no doubt find. Meanwhile the Warner volleyball fans might still be a little disappointed to shop now that their Monarches lost their State B championship to Chester in a classic match that took five sets to determine the ultimate winner. Warner is in the LRC as is Faulkton which did salvage seventh place over Gayville-Volin last Saturday in R...

The past weekends high school state football championships at the Dome indeed turned out to be quite interesting. Even if you aren't necessarily that much of a football fan! But two of our LRC members advanced to the Dome. One of them would be the Faulkton Trojans who sustained a narrow 32-30 loss to Avon. The other conference member was Warner who would have a little easier time to win in a high scoring game. The Monarchs indeed won that game to cap a perfect season. Sioux Falls Lincoln would dominate its inter-city rival O'Gorman in the...

Three of the five teams that beat Ipswich in football this year are heading to the Dome in one division or another. The Tigers were first defeated by Faulkton and their head coach Ipswich grad Shayne Geditz. The Tigers were then defeated by unbeaten Warner, also heading for the Dome in another division. Lastly by Howard, who stopped IHS in a 9AA division playoff game. It should be a real interesting time of the week for all the Dome participants and their fans. That would be true for vollyball in another week. The State-bound teams were...

We enjoyed watching the All-State Orchestra and Chorus in Rapid City Saturday evening on Public TV. It is challenging trying to pick out the Ipswich and Edmunds Central vocalists in the sea of faces. We actually have a shirttail relative from Rapid City in the orchestra. So she was very easy to pick out because she plays a very tiny instrument — the piccolo. And she was the only one, next to the flute players, with the larger flutes. You could watch and hear the instrument since it has a very high pitch, sounding like a tin whistle. She m...

It was a busy weekend and not just for sports. For one thing — congrats to the new Ipswich Snow Queens, Miss Ipswich Karlie Gohl and Junior Miss Ipswich Anna Nierman. And you can hear some loud noises from the area hunters and their dogs. We hear a lot of dogs in our neighborhood and possibly a few more this weekend. October is drawing to a close and that of course means Halloween is right around the corner on Tuesday, Oct. 31. So being it’s a week day you may wear your costumes to work that day! This will be another busy weekend with all the...

We did barely manage to get up in time for the Gypsy Day parade Saturday in Aberdeen. It turned out that it would be fairly decent weather-wise as the day would progress. We caught most of the bands and there were some really impressive ones. Edmunds Central School’s band looked and sounded good. Ipswich had other commitments that day and could not attend. The Tigers are scheduled to march in Groton on Friday and driving to Brookings for Hobo Days on Saturday. Though we did get to see the IHS band in the Gala Day parade in Ipswich on Friday. T...

It is definitely time for homecoming week Gala Week in Ipswich and also NSU's Gypsy Day parade early Saturday to help celebrate their homecoming week. And Ipswich's Gala Day parade is scheduled for Friday afternoon And let's hope that all the affected sports confrontations will result in wins for both Ipswich and NSU if you are indeed a Wolves fan. It sounds like the weather could maybe be fairly decent on both Friday and Saturday. But maybe just a little on the cool side for this time of the year. But NSU's Gypsy Day weather? It has a history...

The equinox is just approaching, but you already know that with the cool temps in the morning and evenings. And you don’t want to be driving west on the Highway at sunset. I’m not sure if that is the case at sunrise heading east. I won’t be finding that out anytime soon. Our days are getting shorter too. There are stories that you can balance an egg on the spring equinox. I’m not sure that is true for the autumn. But maybe you’d rather eat the egg in a fried egg sandwich or make a hard-boiled egg. You certainly don’t have to wait until Easte...

Things are already happening fast regarding the September activity events. There was one thing though that you may have missed and that was Patriot Day on 9-11. But we hope that you did remember the reason for that day and at least were able to fly your flags. But there was one September event that we have really enjoyed, which apparently won't happen this year and that would have been the Northeast South Dakota Celtic Faire at Richmond Lake. Maybe the fish will still be biting there though. I won the grandest door prize they had at last...

Monday holidays always seem to make the rest of the work week go faster. Indeed they do! So we hope that your extended holiday weekend ending on Labor Day Monday went worthwhile and that you got a lot accomplished. But it was quite warm in fact downright hot for much of the weekend so maybe you took it easy instead Ipswich will be hosting a cross country invite on Saturday morning at the athletic complex. That will be a new location. So don’t head to the golf course for the race. There were certainly a lot of vehicles attending the IHS vs. W...

We are asking you to submit items for the newspaper by Friday afternoon due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 4. The office will be closed on that day. Thanks for the cooperation. One down and one or two to go! That's right the Edmunds Central homecoming festivities were last week and Ipswich's event is in the near future. Which won't be that long. They say that time flies when you are having fun and maybe even faster when it isn't all that much fun. The Edmunds Central parade was sweet. How could it not be with all that candy flying...
