To the Editor: TO THE CITIZENS OF IPSWICH: Do you realize how some of your city tax dollars are being spent? Most recently, on several occasions, I personally observed that the city has been using tax payer resources to spray for mosquitoes at Golf View Acres and other private land between Golf View and the City. Golf View is in the county, not the city, and does not pay city taxes. Yet, City tax dollars (personnel, equipment and spray) are being used to spray for mosquitoes there. To my knowledge, any approval or reimbursement that may be...

Believe it not, we got a taker last Wednesday morning for the Wedding RSVP card we got in the office. Abigail and Mathieu were family of a local person who read “Fiddlin’ Around”. Glad we could help. We have talked about how you can see which food lines are the busiest at a fair and the reasons why. We have thought that there is indeed a reason for which lines are the longest and that would most likely be the ones with the best food. We were going to check out the Brown County Fair on Sunday the last day of the fair. It turned out to be a beaut...

House Report by Scott Moore The summer has gone by quite quickly and the start of a new school year has arrived. Remember to be careful as you drive through our communities as there will be multiple bicycles and young walkers crossing our streets and highways. Since the legislative session ended in March, I have had opportunities working mostly with legislators from District 23 and District 3 to meet with individuals and groups to discuss 2023 legislation and future legislation in 2024. In April a group of legislators met with about 12 local...

Did you ever get a wedding invite from somebody that you didn't know was even on the planet? We recently did exactly that. It was missing its entire address on the envelope, only addressed to PO Box Ipswich. The Post Office took a stab and put it in our box. So if you know Abigail and Mathieu who will be married in September stop in the Tribune office by the Subway for your invite. They ask you to RSVP by August 20. We occasionally do receive a graduation or shower invitation, but we usually do know the people who sent it. Anyway it's quite a...

Fortunately the heaviest rain storms avoided us early Saturday during the opening hours of the Ipswich community rummage sales. But the precipitation would unfortunately intensify which still didn't hinder the sales that were totally indoors. On the other hand it may have even improved the attendance at those locations which were totally indoors or at least mostly inside. There had already been some shower activity late Friday, late enough in the day to probably not affect the remainder of the Edmunds County Achievement Days that were...

LETTERS HOME It's been three years since my Mom passed away and some boxes containing her possessions remained unopened. To say that she saved and stored away scraps of life's bits and pieces would be an understatement. Although she was no pack rat or hoarder by any stretch of the imagination, my Mom did save some unique mementos of people, places, and events that occurred during her lifetime. The complete edition of the November 1963 Aberdeen American News newspaper detailing the assassination...

Hosmer was certainly a busy place last Saturday and hopefully that will also be the case this week in Ipswich. Why you might ask? That city will be hosting the annual 4-H Achievement Days starting on Wednesday at the 4H grounds. And all you rummage sale enthusiasts should be sure to check out the Ipswich City-wide Rummage Sales on Saturday. So good luck to all the 4H members and also to the open division entrants with their Achievement Days projects! And all these late-summer events will include the Brown County Fair in Aberdeen followed by...

This column is often about the weather and it really should be this week, featuring a heat wave that's in progress pretty much all over the country the way it sounds! But it might get a little cooler later in our work week? We'll see about that! But don't get your winter coat out of the closet. It might not be that cool for awhile. Monday is the end of July and it's starting to be time for your fresh garden produce, unless it has fallen victim to the heat. There is always a chance for a thunder storm or two this time of the year, especially...

Our sump pump has been intermittent lately. But I think it was mostly dry last week. But that was OK because it allowed some outdoor Fourth of July-related activities including some that had been postponed due to too much rain. One of these would have been their scheduled Fireworks which they postponed until last Friday evening. They were also able to have their snowmobiles on the water competition (Mina Lake obviously) that night. Where I guess only the spectators would have minded bad weather during the competition. But the entrants probably...

Man, July is almost half over and you all know what that means. One recent evening last week was feeling real chilly. Already felt like fall was right around the corner. And school as well! Go in any store and you can see Back-to-School deals. With all the busy extra-curricular events that are always scheduled during August. Our towns will be having city-wide rummage sales. Hosmer and Roscoe have sales on July 22 and a few weeks later on Aug. 5 is Ipswich’s sales. So that should be fun for you bargain hunters! And don’t forget 4-H Ach...

I can’t believe its that time of the year (summer). Yes, June is almost over and we finally got some much welcome rain. I hope you were able to avoid getting too wet in Leola or Bowdle if you went to either. Now we look forward to the various 4th of July celebrations all over the area. So we will obviously have an early deadline for our next paper. Please get your items to us by 4 p.m. on Friday. Happy 4th of July and stay safe with your fireworks....

Edmunds County Producers May be Eligible for Fence Repair Winter Storms have caused severe damage in Edmunds County. If you’ve suffered severe damage to fences, you may be eligible for assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) administered by the Edmunds County Farm Service Agency (FSA) For land to be eligible, the natural disaster must create new conservation problems that, if untreated, would: • be so costly to rehabilitate that Federal assistance is or will be needed to return the land to productive agricultural use • is unus...

The Trail Days weekend offered a variety of events (except rain which we desperately needed). Even if you chose to participate in only one or two of them! Kudos to everybody on the Trail Days committee. There looks like a few more area events which are being planned starting perhaps with Leola's annual Rhubarb Festival and Bowdle Tower Days, both set for June 23-25. And their schedule looks to be equally crowded featuring a parade and plenty of activities. If your kids didn't get enough candy in the Ipswich parade! And there are some food...

When you’re in the vicinity of the Trail Days Arena this weekend drive by Schriver’s Funeral Home. They have a new cool sign announcing their identity. It was designed and set up by Bryan Scherr. We hope to have more about his new project in a future edition. I’m sure many of you will be in the area on Saturday. There will be plenty to do at the Trail Days Arena. An insert in the local papers has a schedule of the activities. Looks like a busy weekend for you guys and stay safe. Have fun!...

We were driving in the evening over the weekend for a weather check. Big clouds surrounded us. But there were no rains coming, but what did we see? A bright half rainbow! It showed up when it hadn't even rained yet. But it did manage a little measurable precip a little later in the evening or perhaps overnight. And we have had some days with 90-degree temperatures along with strong wind. And that were to be expected when summer actually arrives, I guess! But our weather seems to go from one extreme to the other this time of the year. So we...

There is more high school sports to mention in this column again this week, even though the 2022-23 school year has ended. You guessed correctly that I would congratulate the newly-crowned Ipswich boys track and field team that indeed tied with Gregory with 54 team points apiece. Things were that close all three days of the State B boys event. Meanwhile the IHS girls would finish in eighth place exactly landing in the top eight. So they did OK as well. And congratulations to the Edmunds Central and Ipswich boys golfers who will both be competin...

You can get a lot of fresh air at an outdoor sports event. The problem is though that some days the air has been anything but fresh. And they even had to postpone the Class A region in Mobridge for one day because of that! That wasn't really the case for the Class B regional in Gettysburg. It went on as scheduled last Thursday and Ipswich was able to sweep the event, crowning both boys and girls team champions. Meanwhile when the A meet was finally held on Friday the host Tigers also swept their respective team events as well. But North...

Can you believe this? Believe it or not, it is nearly time for the 2022-23 school year's varsity athletic events to conclude with their respective post-season schedules. This will indeed be do or die time in both track and field action and golf. So good luck to our area athletics in their respective regional and state events. And we'll hope that the weather is favorable. That would also be more pleasant for both the athletes and their fans who attend. And the end of the school year is also right around the corner. Ipswich had their graduation...

To the Editor: Ipswich School Board Today, in Biden’s economy, everyone is affected in one way or another. Well just about everyone. My following comment here is one of a concerned taxpayer in which our hard-earned money keeps the Ipswich School afloat. As you know, the school has many employees, all who have unique positions, all working in tandem to keep the school functioning. Not one position should be looked at as more important than the other. With that said, in comes the illustrious school board. The school board as you know decides h...

Congratulations to the Class of 2023, no matter what school you attend. The Class of 2023 encompasses quite an area, not just geographically, but all different levels of education as well. Today’s students have more educational opportunities than ever before and thanks to technology, that will continue to be true. Even more so! Degrees may be obtained online through major universities and those options can certainly be convenient for the non- traditional off-campus student. Especially if you’re trying to hold down a job or two and continue you...

May Day was May 1 and it was significant for several reasons. We could begin with our newspapers and our other office related events or projects. Including all the end of year school related events just to name a few! Believe it or not May has been our historically busiest month, even more so than December. I don't know whether or not you are old enough to remember giving and receiving little baskets full of candy on May Day. That was indeed something to remember. Now apparently undecided high school seniors could announce their college choice...

You could probably put away your snow shovels now but in this country you never know. Especially in the hilly areas to the east and west and north of us. But south is pretty straight and level at least in our county. But old timers can recall that very infrequent blizzard in May or even early June. We may still have a killing frost or two, but certainly hope not. That would take what apple tree blossoms would be left in our back yard, that the rabbits didn't destroy. They say though that the next few weeks could still be rather chilly for this...
