    The North Central girls' varsity basketball team has 11 players this season led by seniors Jenisa Jacobs and Katelyn Engelhart. They also feature one junior in the person of Sydney Bertsch. There are five sophmores: Lindsey Geier, Alaina Dosch, Ella Battie, Amree Vander Vorst and Anne Mateos Fernandez. The varsity freshman newcomers will include Camryn Witlock, Kaidence Bulgin and Ashton Heyne. They will be coached by Kaci Vander Vorst assisted by Ashley Grenz.     Ipswich High School athletes were named to the Lake Region All-Conference teams for volleyball and football. Marley Guthmiller, IHS sophomore, was on the second LRC team. The LRC 2023 team champs were the Warner Monarchs. Ava Nilsson of Warner was the conference MVP. Tigers on the LRC football team are seniors Trevor Heinz and Chet Peterson, junior Max Kulesa and sophomore Kyle Hettich. Casey Geditz, sophomore, was an honorable mention pick.     The North Central Thunder volleyball team fashioned a 3-2 Region 6A victory over Dupree last Monday in Dupree. The win advanced the Thunder to face Miller last Thursday in Miller for a bracket championship. Meanwhile versus Dupree the Thunders' respective game results were 25-20, 15-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-13 in the tie-breaker set.     Herreid -Selby Area fashioned a 3-0 high school Region 6B regional victory while hosting Ipswich last Monday. The individual set scores all in favor of the hosts were 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11. The Wolverines obtained 68 accurate serves that included a dozen aces and were 71-84 in hitting that would include 30 kills. Defensively they came up with 61 digs. The Tigers lost a 3-0 home court outcome to Herreid/Selby Area last Monday, but won a closely contested 3-2 match versus North Central a night later in Roscoe.     North Central dropped a pair of close high school volleyball matches last week to close out their regular-season schedule at 11-17. The Thunder indeed lost a 25-11, 25-13 and 25-20 decision to Northwestern last Monday and a night later went the distance against Ipswich at home in Roscoe. (The Thunder lost this one 3-2.)     Ipswich was defeated 60-14 in a Class 9AA high school first-round football play off last Thursday in Howard. Ipswich would score the first TD of the night when it accepted a punt from Howard’s own territory to around the IHS 30. It was a 60-yard TD pass from Max Kulesa to Kyle Hettich. But the conversion play failed. Ipswich’s only other score came late in the second quarter a pass of 78 yards from Kulesa to Hettich.     Ipswich claimed a league 3-1 girls high school volleyball win last Monday in the Tiger Den over Leola/Frederick Area. But the match was somewhat closer than the final score would indicate.     The NC Thunder volleyball girls were 1-1 in a pair of road appearances. They lost to powerful Warner 25-19, 25-4 and 25-7 on October 16 and bounced back to defeat Wakpala on October 17. Those scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-18. In the latter, the Thunder were 79-100 in attacking the net and included 39 kills.     Ipswich placed two Cross Country Top 25 medalists among the Top 25 runners at the State B last Saturday in Sioux Falls. Madisyn Gellhaus placed 22nd in 20:54.11 for the IHS girls and senior Xavier Kadlec finished in 18th place at 17:44.82. Gracyn Kadlec was 37th in 21:39.64 and Isabella Henderson was 58th in 22:27.65.     North Central sent several runners to the State A Cross Country State Meet last Saturday in Sioux Falls. Their top individual effort came in the boys' meet where Gabe Johnson was 44th in 17:33.72. Senior Anthony Miller was next at 54th in 17:40.34.     The Edmunds County 4-H Shotgun Shooting Sport program had a busy summer shooting to qualify for the state shoot. Shooters spent Wednesday nights at the Ipswich Shooting Range practicing their shotgun skills. The state shoot was held in Mitchell on September 8-10.
