There were two NC varsity girls in their race — Grace Roth 46th in 23:30.83 and Kassandra Abbas 53rd in 24:02.72. Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern won the girls event in 18:20.10, while the boys varsity winner would be Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County in 16: 59.60. North Central participated in a YTC varsity volleyball tourney last Saturday in Gettysburg. The Thunder were defeated 2-0 by Herreid/Selby Area and also lost to Potter County in straight sets. But they defeated McIntosh 25-12, 25-19. Versus McIntosh they were 46-57 in attacking the net with 20 kills, led by Amree Vander Vorst at 13-15 with seven kills. The North Central Thunder girls volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 win over Potter County last Thursday in Roscoe. The set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14 respectively. The Thunder used a 84-104 hitting effort that featured 29 kills. They were led by Amree Vander Vorst at 23-25 with nine kills and Billy Jo Hoffman went 14-19 with six kills. The girls standings found Potter County in first at 20 and Lemmon second at 38. The North Central JV football team got a homecoming win on Aug. 25 in Eureka. The Thunder stopped McLaughlin 50-8 to celebrate Edmunds Central’s homecoming week. Jade Jacobs had a big half for the Thunder. He had a seven yard run, adding the extra point, to begin the scoring, 8-0. Ipswich dropped a 24-6 Lake Region Conference varsity high school football decision on a very warm evening to say the least last Friday in Faulkton. But they include Kadyn Weisser, Trevor Heinz and Chet Peterson, three names that fans should definitely recognize. South Dakota youth had a strong showing at the 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships, including third place for the team sweepstakes award. The 2023 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships were held June 25-30 in Grand Island, Nebraska, and had 718 youth representing 42 states. South Dakota sent 36 youth and nine coaches to this year's competition. Of those 36 youth, 33 placed in the top 10 in their respective events individually or as part of that event's team. The Warner-Ipswich-Northville Junior Legion team finished in sixth place at the state tournament in Lennox this past weekend. The tournament was plagued with water issues, all weekend, resulting in the fifth/sixth place contest being relocated to Groton. The Edmunds Central, Eureka and Bowdle School Boards voted to suspend varsity football play this fall for North Central athletes. The decision was based on projected student participation numbers.
