Sully Buttes spoiled the Ipswich girls' 2021-22 basketball opener 67-33 on Tuesday, Dec. 7 in the Tiger Den. It was a non-conference clash, but both schools are indeed Region 2B members. The Tigers and Chargers had traded baskets early in the game, where the score was tied five different times, the last time being 10-10. But that was when the visiting team exploded for a 22-10 first-quarter ending scoring advantage. (Ipswich's final lead had been a rebound put back by Kaylin Onken for a brief 10...
It's that time of the year again! Ipswich will feature seven senior boys' basketball players along with six additional juniors on its roster. So the 2021-22 Tigers' team under Coach Tyler Severson should be quite deep with plenty of upper-class leadership. This year Severson will be assisted by both Trent Osborne and Todd Thorson. The 2020-21 Tigers' varsity finished its season at 15-7, concluding with a Region 2B bracket championship loss to Lower Brule. So they are definitely hoping to be in the hunt again this year. And you will recognize...

But they will be led by four juniors, alphabetically Katie Bierman, Baylee Kulesa, Quincy Olivier and Ashlyn Weig. Karlie Gohl is the lone sophomore, but there are four freshmen prospects. They are Reaghan Bowers, Sommer DeRaad, Rylee Kleffman and Kaylin Onken. And there are a total of nine eighth graders who are participating in basketball this year which is definitely a good sign for the...

Ipswich closed out its girls' high school volleyball season at 14-14 with a highly contested Region 2B loss to Highmore-Harrold in Highmore last Tuesday. They had gotten off to an impressive start, winning the opener 25-8. But Ipswich regrouped with a 27-25 second-set victory to even things at 1-1. And Ipswich also won the third set 25-10 to put...
Ipswich closed out its regular-season high school volleyball schedule with a 3-1 win over Herreid/Selby Area in Ipswich on Monday, October 25. When those two teams lock horns just about anything can happen and probably will. The win sent Ipswich into its Tuesday, Nov. 2 Region 2B post-season fray with a 14-13 mark, one game over .500. The region will conclude on Thursday, Nov. 4 with the two parallel bracket championships. Ipswich dropped a hard-fought defensive-minded Class 9AA high school football battle 14-0 to Canistota/Freeman last Thursday, Oct. 28 in the Tiger football complex in Ipswich. It was one of those situations where the C-F Pride's own defense would bend and not break, as the old saying goes. They were particularly effective when the Tigers seemed to be making headway towards the Pride's red zone, even reaching it. One particular example of that would be when the Tigers had held on downs themselves...
The State B Cross Country meet took place last Saturday, Oct. 23, in Sioux Falls. The boys' team winner, sweeping our region and the state was, as you might predict, Miller dropping down to Class B this year. (Although the Miller girls didn't fare quite as well.) The Miller boys topped Northwestern 25 to 48 as a team. Freeman Academy/Marion was third and Philip was fourth in the boys' standings. The girls' B was won by Kimball/White Lake over Potter County 26 to 29. Ipswich was fourth in the...

The Tigers indeed won a straight-set victory 25-15, 25-17 and 25-12 over the visiting Titan netters. Ipswich would gradually take control of each respective set and Vanesa Diaz provided their set point in the first set with a tip kill, as did Quincy Olivier in the second set with her own kill. Ipswich would then experience its most impressive set win that...
Ipswich scored in a variety of ways to blank the Lemmon/McIntosh Cowboys, 36-0, in the first round of the 9AA football playoffs at home on Oct. 21. Ipswich had won the toss, but chose to defer to the second half. But the two teams exchanged some scoreless possessions early in the third quarter until the Tigers got the ball at their own 41 and began a three-play scoring drive, capped by Carson Gohl's 45-yard TD scamper. That put Ipswich up 36-0 as the PAT would not be successful with 2:52 left...
Ipswich participated in Tuesday and Thursday high school volleyball action last week - one match away from home and the other in the Tiger Den. Unfortunately they were both setbacks. That road match would be a clash of the Tigers, won by the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers last Tuesday in Mobridge -25-21, 25-14, 28-26. Then Ipswich sustained a 3-1 loss to Hitchcock-Tulare two nights later. There were obviously some bright spots in both matches. A highlight of the Thursday match was that Ipswich had...

The Tiger girls were second only to Potter County 8 to 13 and the IHS boys finished second to Miller 11 to 33. There were 14 Region...

The girls then attended a Saturday invite hosted by Potter County, where they would finish in sixth place, losing the placement match 2-1 to Faith. Faulkton would win the entire tourney, defeating Potter County 2-0 in their championship match, while Wolsey-Wessington topped Philip 2-0 for third. A highlight of this event was that Kaitlyn Bierman was selected to the all-tourney...
Ipswich obtained a huge Lake Region Conference high school football win over Leola/Frederick Area last Friday in Leola by a final margin of 62-20. The game was indeed somewhat closer than that final score would indicate as the two league rivals had traded early blows. Ipswich had jumped ahead with a 30-yard TD run by Carson Gohl and Ian Beyers passed to Matthew Jaenisch for the PAT points. But the Titans matched that with their own 49-yard TD carry by Hans Lapka, followed by a Jericho King PAT carry still in the first quarter. Lapka would...

Katie Bierman went 19-23 there with 11 kills and Gracie Lange was next with a 19-21 eight-kills evening. The Thunder responded with a 43-62 hitting evening that featured nine...
The Ipswich girls and boys each placed fifth in their respective varsity team standings at a Miller invitational high school cross country meet last Monday in Miller. And it turned out to be a competitive event in more ways than one, according to coach Todd Thorson. "It was a hot day, 90 degrees that made it hard for everyone," he explained. "It was a mini state meet with the top teams in both the boys and girls races. If you were in the Top 25, you really had a good race." Ipswich scored 43 team points in the girls' varsity, while Potter...
Ipswich topped Faulkton Area 20-6 in a Lake Region Conference varsity football game last Friday in Faulkton. The Tigers' defensive effort would hold the Trojans to 40 rushing yards. They did fare a little better in the air, though, thanks to a 18-33-4 passing effort by Faulkton quarterback Parker Geditz. (Ryan Beckler had four catches for 77 yards.) Yes that is correct, the Faulkton offensive effort did sustain some costly turnovers, including those four interceptions. One of those was a pass interception TD by Ty Kadlec that would put the...
