The Edmunds County 4-H Horse Show was held on Wednesday, June 30 at the Yellowstone Trail Complex in Ipswich. The nine participants were from Edmunds, Campbell, McPherson, Walworth, and Brown counties. Edmunds County participants were Jalyssa Hutson, Jailey Hutson, Quincy Olivier, and Jacey Rossow. Rev. Timothy Smith of Ipswich hit a hole-in-one at Split Rock Country Club in Ipswich on Friday night, June 25, 2021. Father Smith hit his ace on Hole 2 from 153 yards using a five iron. Jon Hoffman of Mina was the witness. Father Smith was practicing for a Knights of Columbus charity event planned in Ipswich on August 22. The 2021 State B high school golf tournaments concluded last Tuesday in Brookings with Chester emerging as the boys' team champion over Platte-Geddes by two strokes and Estelline/Hendricks won the girls' team event, also defeating runner-up Bison by a pair of strokes. Edmunds County 4-H Shooting Sports will have Shotgun again this summer. They will shoot every Wednesday starting on June 16. Practice will be held at the Sportsman’s Club north of Ipswich starting at 6:30 p.m. The first class will include safety training followed by shooting. You must be a 4-H member to participate. Members may shoot the shotgun of their choice. Shells and clay pigeons for the first round will be provided for 4-H members. One of the annual goals of Ipswich's storied high school girls and boys track and field program under head coach Todd Thorson would be the combined girls and boys championship at the state meet. There is a new format for the 2021 Class B high school track and field state meet! It will consist of the Top 24 qualifiers in each of the 19 girls and boys events recorded during the season up to and including the various regional meets. The IHS boys' team qualified for the State B intact, thanks to its first-place finish in the 5B team-score standings. There were no medals handed out at this meet, but Luke Peterson placed second only to Faulkton's Bennett Cassens, with both golfers actually carding a 78. Ipswich had a busy day at the Region 2B high school school track and field meet in Gettysburg last Thursday. The Tiger boys indeed overwhelmed second-place Potter County 213.5 to 85 with North Central narrowly in third at 84.5. The regional high school golf meet is scheduled for May 24 at the Broadland Creek golf course in Huron. Ipswich competed in the Lake Region Conference track and field meet last Thursday, hosted by Ipswich. And that was an understatement! The Tigers actually dominated the meet, especially at the varsity level. (This meet featured both some varsity and middle-school events.) The weather permitted a May 4 track and field meet to be held in Eureka, sponsored by the Eureka Lions. Ipswich got second in both the girls' and boys' team outcomes. On the women's side only the Aberdeen Central girls were able to out-score Ipswich 195.5 to 105. Eleven girls' teams managed to score at this event. Ipswich made an impact at the LRC golf meet last Thursday in Aberdeen. The Tigers featured the first place medalist in both the girls and boys divisions of the meet. And their combined leadership indeed contributed to the Tigers’ team showing at the meet. Once again there was a high school track and field attended by more than one Tiger team. It was indeed the Groton Invitational hosted by the Groton Tigers last Tuesday in Groton.
