Meanwhile, Ipswich didn't have enough girls to be eligible for their team standings, but...

It was a good day to be a Tiger at a high school track and field invitational hosted by Mobridge-Pollock last Thursday in Mobridge. How so? The Mobridge-Pollock Tigers swept both the girls and boys team standings, followed by Ipswich in second place in both divisions. That's right! The host Tiger girls edged Ipswich 146.5 to 126, while the M-P Tiger boys claimed a 154.5 to 123.5 team score edge over their Ipswich counterparts. The Ipswich girls obtained a pair of individual event wins, as well as two relay victories. Katelyn Geditz won the...

(The IHS golfers should be getting quite familiar with t...
It's that time of the year, time for post-season winter sports honors. That of course would include Lake Region Conference recognition. On the girls' side, Katie Bierman and Halle Heinz were on the LRC girls first-team. Heinz was named the conference girls basketball MVP. Chesney Olivier was named to the second team. Furthermore Heinz earned a spot on the Class B All-State first team. What more can you say but that she was a well-rounded athlete. The senior guard averaged 20 points per game,...

Two Aberdeen based basketball teams had their seasons come to an end last week in the Barnett Center in Aberdeen. The Northern Wolves, hosting their regions, lost a heart-breaker in overtime in the championship game. Aberdeen Christian also lost a State B championship bid on Saturday there, dropping a 59-43 outcome to top-seeded DeSmet. This seemed to be one of those tournaments where everybody was really playing for second place, with DeSmet gaining convincing wins on its way to its B championship. Aberdeen Christian had upset Canistota 55-49...
What are the odds of having a state basketball team winning its tourney for the very first time in school history? Probably not great, right? But having that same thing happen in one of the other state tournaments that same weekend? That’s amazing to say the least and is exactly what happened this past weekend in South Dakota. That’s right, White River indeed won its first ever girls’ State B last Saturday in Huron with an ambush of top-seeded Castlewood 57-37 in the title game. Meanwhile, Ethan placed third over Corsica-Stockney 59-48. And o...

Ipswich had begun its 2021 Region 2B boys' high school basketball campaign with a narrow 54-48 win over the Faulkton Area Trojans last Tuesday in the Tiger Den. (Ipswich entered the tourney as the overall third seed and Faulkton was the number six seed.) The visitors certainly made things quite interesting in the final quarter. They did that with a huge trey that evened the score at 48 apiece. But that would prove to be their final scoring damage in the closing minute or so. That's because Eric...
Ipswich dropped a Region 2B boys' high school bracket championship game to Lower Brule by a 60-48 margin there last Friday. What was notable about the verdict was that Ipswich had lost a regular-season encounter to Lower Brule by a fairly similar margin at home in the Tiger Den. So the 2B defeat finished Ipswich's 2020-21 campaign at 15-7 and advanced the Sioux into one of the SoDak 16 encounters. The Potter County Battlers had easily handled Herreid/Selby Area in the other 2B bracket that same night to also punch their ticket into the SoDak...
There will be one girls' basketball team in the State B from Region 2B and the same will be true for the 2B boys. How is that? The Herreid/Selby Area Wolverine girls were able to hang on to win their SoDak 16 battle with Menno, winning a close one that went down to the final possession, as close games so often do. But last year's girls' State B qualifier Faulkton was eliminated by Ethan in their 2021 SoDak 16 showdown. Here's why Region 2B will only send one team to the boys' B, Potter County or Lower Brule! The 2B bracket champions, were to...
Four boys and a girl competed for Ipswich/Bowdle in the State B Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 25-27 in Rapid City. Coach Todd Naasz said "I felt that the boys and girl performed very well at the state meet and really represented our schools well. I believe that this experience was a great opportunity for them to learn and added fuel to fire for them to train in the off-season to want to accomplish this goal again." Marley Guthmiller placed third in the B129 division. Marley defeated Sara...
The percentage of basketball games at any level that are that are won by the visiting team with the game clock winding down thanks to a designed play probably isn't all that high. But Ipswich did exactly that with a 61-60 victory over its LRC arch-rival Leola-Frederick last Friday in Leola. What happened was that the hosts would only make one of two free throw tries with nine ticks on the game clock for a brief two-point 60-58 edge. But Ipswich was able to get a time out, then worked the ball to Ty Kadlec over the top of the Titan defense and...
Ipswich dropped a close 54-47 Region 2B decision to Lower Brule in girls' high school basketball action in the Tiger Den here last Tuesday.
