    -deg|Jan 20, 2021

Basketball outcomes can sometimes feature lengthy runs by both teams and that was certainly the case during the Ipswich boys' 56-53 non-conference victory over Sully Buttes last Tuesday in the Tiger Den. The Tigers indeed held on for that three -point one-possession win, shaved in half from six points by a Chargers' trey with about four seconds left. The Tigers had put together a seemingly insurmountable 50-33 edge with a nine-point run started by a Carson Gohl layup to close out the third...

And the third-quarter scoring battle would then result in a 7-7 defensive stand off. But the...

  • Warbirds sneak by Tigers

    Jan 6, 2021

The Ipswich boys' basketball team rallied from an early 13-3 quarter deficit, but it fell just short, resulting in a razor-thin 37-36 win by the Wolsey-Wessington Warbirds over the Tigers during the Big Bo Classic action in Wolsey last Wednesday. It immediately followed a girls' game there that was won by Ipswich 55-45. The Tigers narrowed their halftime deficit to 19-15 with a six-point second-quarter scoring edge, trailing just 19-15 at the half. Ipswich also continued that momentum in the third quarter for a 28-25 lead of its own. But the ho...

  • Ipswich girls get first loss on the road

    -deg|Dec 30, 2020

Waubay/Summit escaped with a 50-48 home-court girls' varsity basketball win over Ipswich last Tuesday in Waubay. The non-conference loss was the first blemish on the Tigers' 2020-21 season record. But it was close, according to coach Brian Hogie. The winning possession? "They hit two free throws to go up two," he explained. "We were down 48-40 with 2:00 minutes to go. We made a run, tying it up 48-48. Then they got the two free throws. We had a couple shots at the end, but just couldn't get them to fall." The hosts had narrowly led, 14-13...

Ipswich also won both individual quarters in the second half, 17-10 and 17-4, respectively. Ipswich's largest lead in the game would be 31 points and Webster never ever led. The score was tied five times with seven lead changes and ended up within two possessions. Ipswich's largest lead would briefly be by 10 points. • Nail biter for Tigers and W/S Mustangs

    -deg|Dec 16, 2020

What more could you ask from a close game other than maybe an overtime or two? But the Ipswich boys indeed held on to stave off Waubay/Summit 54-53 last Saturday in Ipswich. And it was that close to an OT. Josh McQuarie gave the Tigers a late 54-52 edge, giving the visitors a last possession. It would result in a visiting player being fouled, sending him to the line. The first one did find its target, but the second foul shot attempt narrowly missed with no opportunity for an offensive rebound...
