Ipswich-Edmunds Central is indeed entering the 9A high school football play-offs this Thursday, Oct. 18 with an overall 3-5 record after an upset win over North Border on Friday, Oct. 5 that closed out the Tigers' regular-season schedule. (They had a bye-week in the last week of their season.) They are one of four at-large teams making the playoffs in 9A. The top three teams in each of the four regions automatically qualify for the post-season plus the next four teams seeded teams statewide and Ipswich-EC was one of those four. Being an...

Ipswich dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision to Lake Region Conference rival Faulkton Area on Monday in the Tiger Den. It was the last home match for the seniors and they and their parents were the honorees on Senior Night. The initial set was highly contested throughout the set with several ties. The last tie was at 26-26 but the visitors closed out the set with a pair of points for a 28-26 win. The second set wasn't quite so close, though, as Ipswich was defeated 25-16. But the third set was...

Getting ready for its huge LRC battle with Faulkton, the Ipswich volleyball team won a 3-1 non-league road decision at Hitchcock-Tulare last Thursday. But the hosts weren't quite ready to turn off the gym lights quite yet and regrouped for a hard-fought 26-24 win. But Ipswich sealed the deal with another close outcome of 25-23. • Lady Tigers LRC cross country champions

    Oct 10, 2018

Led by Aleah Steger's course-record-setting clocking at the Lake Region Conference cross country meet at Split Rock Country Club in Ipswich last Wednesday, the IHS Lady Tigers cruised to a 10-point 9 to 19 team win over their nearest competitor Aberdeen Christian in less than optimal weather conditions. Steger's amazing 18:36.37 clocking indeed topped the previous record-holder IHS graduate Macy Heinz, now at USD, by some 14 seconds. "Aleah sure had a good run," said IHS coach Todd Thorson....

  • I-EC Tigers stop North Border

    Oct 10, 2018

Down through the years, successful PAT plays can be hard to come by in nine-man football. And the lack of conversion points can come back to haunt you in a close game between otherwise quite equally matched teams. That is just what happened to North Border last Friday, resulting in a 14-12 Ipswich-Edmunds Central win in Eureka. Actually Ipswich-EC had gotten a real decent opportunity to take an initial lead after a scoreless first quarter where each team had tested the other teams' defense in a...

  • WiLdKats stop Tigers

    Oct 3, 2018

Ipswich-Edmunds Central played host to a non-conference foe, Kimball-White Lake, on Senior Night last Friday, honoring the Tiger seniors and their parents. But the visitors eventually did their own celebrating with a 37-0 win over the Tigers. They methodically drove for a pair of first-quarter scores, culminated by Carter Fredericksen's two-yard and three-yard scampers, respectively. Wyatt Talbott kicked the PAT after the second touchdown for a 13-0 WildKats lead. The visitors added a second-qua...

  • Lady Tigers get two wins

    Oct 3, 2018

The Ipswich Lady Tiger volleyball team earned a pair of wins in two recent appearances. The Lady Tigers edged Edmunds Central 3-1 last Thursday in Roscoe and then topped Eureka/Bowdle 3-1 on Monday in the Tiger Den. That was a Lake Region Conference affair. A sidenote to the win over Edmunds Central, according to coach Trent Osborne, was that this year's senior players had played varsity volleyball as ninth graders with the head coach from EC, Langley Secker Manzey. "Also last night (against EC)...

  • I-EC Tigers stopped by Warner in IHS Homecoming game

    -deg|Sep 26, 2018

Ipswich-Edmunds Central hosted LRC rival Warner Area for an Ipswich homecoming event last Friday, but the visitors eventually celebrated with a 27-2 victory over the Tigers. They might have started their celebration after an early interception planted them on the Tiger 39-yard line! And shortly thereafter the Monarchs did dent the Tiger endzone with a one-yard pass play from Ben Fischbach to Daylin Simon. (Spencer Ketterling kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 8:37 showing on the scoreboard...

    -deg|Sep 26, 2018

  • Lady Tigers battle at home last week

    Sep 26, 2018

The Ipswich Lady Tiger volleyball team sustained a couple of difficult homecourt defeats last week. The Lady Tigers were competitive and then some, but couldn't quite close things out, especially in a Tuesday match against a potential regional rival, Potter County. It ended up to be a 3-2 win for the visitors, thanks to their comeback from a 13-8 deficit in the tie-breaker set. Ipswich was then within an eyelash of forcing a fifth set against LRC rival Langford, but the Lions rallied for a 25-22...

  • Tigers second at weekend tourney

    Sep 19, 2018

What a difference a year makes! Last year the Ipswich Lady Tiger netters were 1-3 during a high school volleyball invitation at Britton-Hecla. This year, though, the IHS volleyball team improved to 3-1 at the meet, losing only to Langford Area. That gave Ipswich second-place honors at the event and also congratulations go to Ipswich coach Trent Osborne for his 150th career volleyball victory. Against Leola-Frederick, Ipswich won 25-10 and 25-16. Abby Grabowska was 36-40 in hitting and included a dozen kills. Lindsey Grabowska added four kills...

  • Lady Tigers play LRC foes here last week

    Sep 19, 2018

In preparing for last Saturday's Britton-Hecla volleyball invite, Ipswich dropped a pair of Lake Region Conference decisions, one at home and the other on the road. The Lady Tigers lost in straight sets in both instances. They lost a home-court 25-8, 25-11, 25-21 outcome to Warner and then two nights later at Northwestern the host team topped Ipswich 25-6, 25-16 and 25-15. Against Warner, though, despite the eventual setback, things progressively got better for the Lady Tigers. Especially...

  • I/EC gridders stopped in Miller

    Sep 19, 2018

Ipswich-Edmunds Central traveled to Miller for a non-conference high school football game last Friday, but the hosts weren't very generous. Miller/Highmore-Harrold jumped off to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. They added three second-quarter scoring opportunities, while I-EC got on the board once before the half to face a 36-8 halftime deficit. The hosts also outscored the Tigers 12-8 in the third quarter for a comfortable 32-point lead and neither team was able to score in the final stanza, resulting in a 48-16 hosts' win. For I-EC, Ben Kulesa...

    Sep 19, 2018

Barb Gillick had a hole-in-one at the Split Rock Country Club golf course on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018. It was five years ago when Barb's sister Gail had a hole-in-one on the same hole. Barb said the ace was a birthday gift. She used the five wood she recently received for her birthday. The feat was witnessed by her husband Tim and Hugo Grosz....

  • Tigers stopped by Trojans at home

    Sep 12, 2018

Ipswich-Edmunds Central dropped a 40-8 Lake Region Conference high school football showdown to Faulkton Area last Friday in Ipswich. The hosts were really stingy defensively for much of the first half, but so was Faulkton. Especially after the Trojans had fumbled on their own 37, recovered by Josh McQuarie on Faulkton's opening possession of the game! That would be the first red zone bullet the Trojans would dodge, but not the last. Later in the half, the visiting defensive unit stopped a Tiger...

  • Lady Tigers get wins last week

    Sep 12, 2018

Ipswich won both of its two high school volleyball matches last week and again fed off senior Abby Grabowska's relentless net attack. Grabowska had entered the week needing just 12 kills to become a member of the 1000 career kills club and the first-ever IHS player to be a member of both the 1000 career digs club and the 1000 career kills plateau. Abby Grabowska got her necessary kills and then some against Sully Buttes here last Tuesday in a highly contested non-league battle, which featured a...

  • Boys and girls champions at Tiger Invite

    Sep 12, 2018

History repeats itself! Just as last year, the Ipswich varsity cross country program swept its own invitational meet last Saturday at Split Rock Country Club. Both the IHS girls and boys ran well, especially the Lady Tigers, who featured their three scoring runners with a perfect 1-2-3 6-point score to outpoint runner-up Miller with 18 points. Indeed Lady Tiger senior Aleah Steger crossed the finish line first in 19:10.66, followed by Tessa Kilber in second at 20:06.36 and Emily DeRaad, third...

  • Volleyball team on the road last week

    Sep 5, 2018

Ipswich split a pair of 3-1 non-conference high school volleyball outcomes last week, both on the road. Last Tuesday the IHS Lady Tigers lost to their Groton counterparts in three really close outcomes -- 25-23, 25-20 and the fourth set 26-24, respectively. But Ipswich stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the third set. The Lady Tigers then got back into the win column two nights later in Waubay. And Ipswich coach Trent Osborne wasn’t really all that disappointed with the loss to Class A Groton. “The girls played great,” he said. “Groton is a to...

  • Lions stop Tigers in Langford

    Sep 5, 2018

Ipswich-Edmunds Central got on the scoreboard first, but eventually succumbed to Langford Area 34-14 in a Lake Region Conference "Battle of the Big Cats" high school football game in Langford last Friday. The Tigers’ two touchdowns were respectively produced by that first-quarter scoring drive, capped by Ben Kulesa’s four-yard strike to Daniel Braun and a two-point conversion hook-up by the same duo and then a short fumble-recovery return to paydirt by Jacob Nierman in the third quarter. That latter TD temporarily lifted Ipswich-EC into a 14-...
