International team of runners promotes peace

An international group running for peace stopped in Edmunds County last week.

The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run was founded in 1987 by Sri Chinmoy. His message: "World peace begins in the heart of each of us, and that we all have an important role to play in making the world a more harmonious place.

A team of 11 runners stayed in the Hospitality Hotel in Ipswich on July 3. The runners began the 4th of July in Bowdle, planning to run 90 miles to Andover. Each runner takes turns running two miles.

Four of the team members stopped in Roscoe for a Peace Torch ceremony with Roscoe Mayor Leland Treichel.

The international team is from seven different countries and will be on the road for four months in an over 11,000-mile relay to promote peace, harmony and friendship according to Prakhara Harter, the Peace Run media coordinator.

Along the route they meet with schools and youth organizations to share the message of peace and to pass the Torch.

The 2018 North American Route began in Miami, Fla. on March 5. Their route circles the United States with short trips into Mexico and Canada. The final destination is New York City on August 15.
