4-H Achievement Days begins today

The 2018 Edmunds County 4-H Achievement Days are underway at the 4-H Grounds in Ipswich today.

The dog show began at 8 a.m. today, Aug. 1, 2018. The Open Youth Horse Show and Fun Day begins at 4 p.m.

Come out and see the various static exhibits in the building and the livestock exhibits in the back barn Thursday and Friday.

Thursday’s events include the judging of the static exhibits as well as poultry, rabbit, and cat judging. There will also be a Nursing Home Animal Show at 6 p.m.

The Thursday evening program at 7 p.m. includes the crowning of the 2018 Achievement Day Royalty. See page 6 for profiles of the candidates. The Pre 4-H Pet Show, Project Runway and Judging Team introductions are also part of the Thursday evening program.

Friday starts off with the Livestock Show at 8:30 a.m. The day will include judging of swine, sheep, goats, dairy and beef and showmanship in each division.

Bottle Bucket Calf judging will conclude the livestock judging.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service will conduct slake testing beginning at 5 p.m. near the 4-H Building. The slake test is a way to visualize how different soil management practices can impact our soil and water interactions. They will also be conducting EC tests (salinity tests), which gives a reading of how much salt is present in the soil and discuss the impacts they have on our crops and soil.

The Friday evening begins with the annual BBQ, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., which features chicken this year. Tickets are available at the door.

The Pre 4-H Livestock Show will start at 7 p.m. followed by the Premium Sale.
