Cross Country girls champions at Pheasant Invitational

For the second straight week, the Ipswich girls have narrowly defeated runner-up Aberdeen Roncalli in a high school cross country meet, this time at the Pheasant Invitational, ran at the Fisher Grove Golf Course near Redfield last Thursday. And on Thursday the Lady Tigers manufactured a little more breathing room over Roncalli, resulting in a nine-point 17 to 26 win.

Credit Lady Tiger Aleah Steger with an individual win in 19:24.5. The runner-up was Jessica Boekelheide of Northwestern Area in 19:50.22. Ipswich's next runner, meanwhile, in the outstanding competition was Tessa Kilber in fourth at 20:45.50. Also competing for Ipswich were Emily DeRaad, 12th in 21.36.52 and 27th-placer Kari Kanable in 22:48.48.

The Tiger boys, meanwhile, didn't have a full team, but were represented by Maxwell Geditz, fourth in 17:41.14 and Ben Kulesa, tenth in 18:29.24. (The other potential Tiger varsity prospects for the time being are gaining experience at the non-varsity level.)

Cody Larson led Warner to the boys' varsity team title with a 16:54.57 individual win over teammate Michael Wirth in 17:05.11. So you can just about guess that Warner was in pretty decent shape for a high finish in the team race and did indeed manufacture an impressive 8 to 37 boys' win over Milbank.

Ipswich will host its own invitational at Split Rock this Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. with a rolling schedule, starting with the girls’ varsity.
