Two former Ipswich girls' track and field stars represented their respective university teams at an indoor invite at SDSU last weekend in Brookings.
Macy Heinz runs for the University of South Dakota as a sophomore and Tori Moore is a Black Hills State University senior.
The University of South Dakota won the women’s 4x400-meter relay to cap off the meet Saturday evening. That quartet consisted of sophomore Danielle Thompson, junior Ellie Wilson, sophomore Macy Heinz and senior Mallory Fine, clocked 3:52.54.
Heinz had dropped another two seconds off her collegiate best time for 800 meters earlier on Saturday with a runner-up finish in 2:10.81. That was the third-fastest time in USD program history. "I looked this up from my records," said Ipswich sports historian Marv Seyer "and the fastest time she recorded in high school was 2:11.09 in the Howard Wood Relays in 2015 which was an outdoor meet."
She also participated on the winning distance medley team from USD, carrying the baton for the 800-meter leg. That quartet turned in the second fastest time in USD program history in that event.
Meanwhile, Moore ran in the women's 5K and placed tenth among 39 contestants in 17:45.38.
Looking through the results we also saw another familiar name. Edmunds Central grad Bryce Malsam was competing for Northern State.
