University of South Dakota senior Ethan Fenchel and sophomore Macy Heinz broke program records in their respective events on Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Tune-Up inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Heinz clocked 1:32.71 for 600 meters, which just edged out a seven-year-old record held by fellow South Dakota native Emma (Erickson) Ladwig. Senior Mallory Fine just missed Ladwig’s time herself by six-hundredths of a second. Fine crossed the finish line in 1:33.66 for third place.
Fenchel launched the weight throw 68 feet, 11 ¾ inches to break his own Coyote program record by eight inches. Fenchel was the top collegian in the competition, finishing behind three-time Olympian and USD throws coach A.G. Kruger, who launched the weight 73-6 ¾.
The meet served as a final tune-up for the Coyotes. The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships are staged for next Friday and Saturday in Brookings.
