OLD COURTHOUSE CONSTRUCTED IN 1889

The former Edmunds county courthouse which was built in 1889 and 1890 was considered at that time one of the best buildings that could be built. Constructed of stone and brick at a cost to the county of $11,000.00 it was considered adequate for many years to come. Public records had accumulated by 1935 to such an extent that there was not room in the building for some of the county officers. The offices of the sheriff and the county judges, as well as that of the agricultural agent had to be housed in other buildings in down town Ipswich. Furthermore, there was a constant menace of fire as this old building was not fire proof.

The new building is absolutely fire proof, is up-to-date, in every way and is outstanding among the courthouse of the state architecturally and in construction.

While the old courthouse was being torn down preparatory to the construction of the new building county offices were housed in two buildings in downtown Ipswich, the American Legion Hall and another small brick building. While the offices were housed in these locations temporarily it was necessary for the county board to hire a night watchman in order to safeguard county records in case fire broke out.

The people of Edmunds county may well feel proud of the new building which will serve their needs for the coming centuries.
