Ipswich’s Brian Hogie was named the Aberdeen American News All-Area Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. And three of his stalwarts were also named to the AAN All-Area Girls Basketball Team for 2019.
Two of them, Kamryn Heinz and Abby Grabowska, were IHS seniors, of which Ipswich featured seven this season. The third member of the trio was sophomore Halle Heinz. (Warner’s Laurie Rogers was named the player of the year.)
According to Hogie, Kamryn Heinz finished her career as the second leading scorer and rebounder for Ipswich, with the most ever assists and career three pointers. She averaged 18 points per game and 10 rebounds per outing, along with four assists PPG. That was all after returning to the lineup after a summer knee injury. She was first team Class B All-State this year.
Abby Grabowska averaged 11 points per game, seven rebounds and two steals, while defensively absorbing 16 charges. Meanwhile Halle Heinz came away averaging 17 points per game, four rebounds per game and three steals per game. She netted a school record 66 three-pointers in a season and another IHS mark with 10 three’s in a single game. That alone put her at the 30 point level that night. It happened two other times during the season. Defensively she was no slouch either and set a school season record of 78 steals. She was third-team Class B All-State.
Obviously the trio were All-LRC as well. They were integral to the Lady Tigers’ 19-5 season and seventh-place in the State B, guided by Hogie.
Hogie had coached Ipswich into the Dome early in his career as a football coach here (right out of college) and he’s now led the IHS girls hoops team to a berth in the State B. It was the Ipswich girls’ first since 1988.
There were several good IHS girls hoops teams which just couldn’t quite clear the final hurdle, including last year’s team which was one win away from the State B. And that also had happened more than once before that.
Hogie has been in Ipswich 13 years. His 2018-19 girls basketball team had to battle through multiple injury obstacles. But their teamwork throughout the year was reflected by impressive steal and assist to turnover ratios. They set a standard for future Lady Tiger lineups and look forward to what they could possibly accomplish in the future.
