The Region 5B high school golf tournament was held on Monday, May 20 at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron. The Tiger boys were the runner-up regional champs with an aggregate 278, second only to Potter County's 266, among 11 teams eligible for the team standings. Selby Area claimed third at 289.
Individually, Ipswich's Luke Peterson placed first with a score of 84, Ethan Gilbert was fifth with a score of 90, Chet Peterson was 14th with a score of 104 and Matthew Jaenisch was 16th with a score of 106. And all four IHS golfers would have individually made the cut at 19th place 108, among the 32 total boy golfers in Monday's meet. But that second-place team standing automatically qualified the Tigers for the State B as an intact team.
Meanwhile, Halie Feldman was the lone Ipswich girl to qualify for state, placing 11th with a score of 122. Other girls that went but did not make it to state were Kamryn Boettcher 18th at 139, Angeline Rye 22nd at 160 and Tarynn Kleffman 27th among 31 total golfers in the meet with her 185.
The girls' medalist was Erin Moncur of Miller with a 90, five strokes better than the runner-up Lauren Witler of Sully Buttes, who carded a 95. The girls' team crown went to Selby Area at 332, followed by Faulkton at 346 and Potter County at 358. (Ipswich was fifth among eight eligible girls' teams with its 421.)
The State B golf meet will indeed take place on June 3-4 in Yankton. It was moved there due to poor course conditions in Mitchell.
