Ipswich attended a high school cross country invite in Miller on Monday with some positive results in the Class A/B meet. Let IHS Coach Todd Thorson explain them: "Tessa (Kilber) sure ran good today. She beat last year's State B champ and finished second overall," Thorson said. "Max (Geditz) wasn’t feeling well, but still wanted to run. But I thought that the boys packed it up and ran good. Sommer (DeRaad) really had a good race for the JV, finishing in first and Kaylin (Onken) got third.”
Among the 41 girls' varsity runners who finished, Kilber was indeed second only to Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock 20:42.11 to 20:54.71. Emily DeRaad was next in ninth at 22:25.03. Ashley Ptacek placed 22nd in 23:35.45. Meanwhile, in the boys' 52-member varsity event, Faulkton Area featured the top two finishers, Andrew Sorensen in 18:03.20 and Hunter Niederbaumer, 18:11.72. For Ipswich, Taylor Thorson did complete the race in 19:38.18 for tenth place, followed by Geditz at 19:55.37 for 15th and Turner Thorson in 16th at 19:57.43. Evan Onken was next in 19th at 20:04.82 and Dylan Wald completed the effort in 21:05.82 for 29th.
In the girls' JV run, Sommer DeRaad indeed won the event, clocked at 17:16.54 and yes Onken was third in 18:30.35, followed by Chloe Jager, fifth in 19:02.65. Xavier Kadlec ran in the boys' JV event and finished sixth in 16:32.
In girls' middle-school, Gracyn Kadlec was eighth in 13:19.22 and Gabrielle Wald ninth in 13:28.66, followed closely by Madisyn Gellhaus in tenth at 13:32.15. In 14th was Ashlinn Hartwell at 13:59.37 and Ava Davis 23rd in 15:15 and Natalie Crissman next at 16:59.43 in 32nd.
The team results were not known at press time.
Ipswich will next attend a Highmore-Harrold Invite on October 5. The LRC Cross Country is planned on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Ipswich at 12:30 p.m.
