As has been the case in several instances in recent years, our area high school football teams didn't fare all that well in the latter stages of the post-season clashes.
In our division—Class 9A, Canistota/Freeman outlasted Britton-Hecla in the state championships held in Brookings on Thursday and Friday. And in 9B Herreid/Selby Area was overwhelmed by Colman-Egan. And in 9AA both championship-game teams were from the south with Viborg/Hurley outlasting Bon Homme.
And in 11-man ranks, Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan topped Winner in 11B, Canton stopped Lennox in 11A, Pierre Riggs defeated Brookings in 11AA and O'Gorman prevailed over Brandon Valley in Class 11AAA.
In volleyball, there are more familiar faces even if Ipswich didn't quite make it in its SoDak 16 bid. Three other teams from the Lake Region Conference will be playing this weekend in Rapid City. Top-seeded Northwestern will take on number-eight Bridgewater-Emery on Thursday, followed by number-four Faith vs. number-five Warner also in the afternoon.
In the evening number-three Ethan takes on number-six Burke, the team that defeated Ipswich in the SoDak 16. And the nightcap game will feature number-two Chester Area vs. number-seven Faulkton Area. That team, Northwestern and Warner the defending champion, will all represent the LRC.
An area team, Groton Area, will play in the State A, also in Rapid City Nov. 21-23. Top-seeded Miller will also play in the A.
