Accident claims the lives of IHS students

Two people died and three other people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday night south of Tulare.

At press time the names of the five people involved were not being released pending notification of family members.

“Our hearts are broken today. Two beautiful young people taken far too soon,” was part of the Ipswich School Facebook site on Monday. “We will take time to grieve together, cry together and be strong together, today.” School doors opened at 8 a.m. on Monday to allow students time to be together. Clergy and counselors were available for those who wanted to talk with someone. School started at 10 a.m.

The 2007 Chevrolet Impala was northbound on U.S. Highway 281 when it crossed the centerline and struck head-on a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 281.

Both female occupants of the Impala were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was 15 years old and the passenger 18 years old. Both were wearing seat belts.

All three occupants of the pickup received serious non-life threatening injuries. The three were hospitalized. Two of the three occupants were wearing seat belts; the 65-year-old passenger was not.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.

The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Funeral Arrangements

Mass of Christian Burial for Jayna R. Sanborn, 18, and Kylee L. Sanborn, 15, is 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2019 at Ipswich High School Gymnasium. Fr. Timothy Smith will serve as Celebrant of the Mass with assistance from Deacon Lonnie Grabowska. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Ipswich.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the school on Monday.

Jayna and Kylee died in a motor vehicle accident near Tulare on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019.
