The Ipswich girls' basketball team was defeated in its lone appearance last week, a hard-fought 54-47 setback to Region 2B rival Herreid/ Selby Area in Selby.
As you might possible guess, the first quarter had decided nothing with both teams coming away with 15 points. But the host team out-pointed its visitors 12-9 in the second quarter to grab a somewhat tenuous one-possession 27-24 halftime lead. The Wolverine girls then out-scored Ipswich 19-7 with a quarter to play for a 46-31 edge.
But Ipswich fought back furiously in the final quarter as you might also predict, doubling their hosts 16-8 down the stretch. However, the Wolverines were able to stave off the Tiger girls for their eventual two-possession victory.
Ipswich received an outstanding game-high 23 points from Halle Heinz, who included a pair of treys, followed by Chesney Olivier also in double-figures with 14 points. But from there, further scoring tapered off to four points from Lindsey Grabowska. Then Bailey Pitz and Ashton Loken each added a trey for three points apiece.
The hosts were led by Kendell Sawinsky and Rachel Fiedler with 15 points each, followed by Rylee Rossow with 12 points, Lauren Grage with eight points and Jennica Berens with four points.
Herreid/Selby Area featured two treys in its 21 floor-shot total, along with a 10-18 free throw evening. Ipswich countered with four treys among its 19 accurate floor-shot attempts, but only got to the charity stripe seven times while making five. Close games are often decided by the free throw differential and that may have been a factor in this outcome as well. Also rebounding! The hosts enjoyed a 42-34 rebounding edge, despite nine by Heinz, almost a double-double. Turnovers were fairly close though with Ipswich sustaining 10 and HSA 11.
Ipswich was next scheduled to host Leola/Frederick on February 4. The Tiger girls and boys will then face Miller in Miller on February 7. The Tiger girls will then host Aberdeen Christian in league play on the 11th of this month.
