Tigers stop Wolverines, Region 2B next week

Tuning up for regional play, Ipswich traveled to Selby on Monday and outlasted the home team the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines 3-1.

The Tigers got off to a great start in that one with back to back 25-21 wins. But the home team wasn't about ready to let the janitors onto the floor with their backs to the wall and prolonged the game with a hard-fought 30-28 outcome in set #3. But volleyball is so momentum driven and Ipswich regained its earlier momentum and then some with a 25-12 victory in set #4.

“It is always good to put a mark in the ‘W’ column vs. a very good team which creates some great momentum and confidence for a team,” said Coach Trent Osborne.

Ipswich was led in serving by Bailey Pitz 21-21 with two aces and Halle Heinz 17-17 also with a pair of aces. The Lady Tigers totaled 96 accurate serves and included seven aces. The pair also dominated the setting statistics, as well. Heinz was 57-58 with 21 assists and Pitz 55-55 including 18 assists. Ipswich totaled 104 sets with 40 assists.

In spiking, the Tiger girls were led by Lindsey Grabowska, going 34 of 41 with 13 kills. Next were Paige Mehlberg 15-17 with 11 kills and Halie Feldman 14-14 with eight kills. The team went 121-136 with 41 kills.

There were five solo blocks and six assisted led by Mehlberg with two solos and five assists and Gracie Lange one solo and four assists.

The defenders came up with 107 team digs, led by Chesney Olivier with 39 and Grabowska with 27.

At this point in the season there were still some regular-season matches around the state that will help determine the ultimate 2B pairings, according to Coach Trent Osborne.

There are two regional championship brackets and both of those winners, crowned on Nov. 5, will advance to the SoDak 16, one game away from the State B. Ipswich managed that achievement a year ago, but would eventually lose its SoDak 16 appearance. Faulkton again appears to be the top seed in the region and in the 1-4-5-8-9 tourney bracket (as it was last year) and in the opposite bracket from Ipswich and Highmore-Harrold, who are battling to be the overall second seed and in the 2-3-6-7 tourney bracket and will host their 2B openers on Tuesday.
