Volleyball teams head to State, football state champs crowned

One of the two Region 2B girls' high school volleyball bracket champions, Ipswich came up short in its SoDak 16 bid, losing 3-1 to Hitchcock-Tulare, coached by Roscoe native Jordan Opp last Tuesday in Hitchcock.

That sends the Patriots to the State B on November 19-21 in Huron and will face #2 Warner in their opener on Thursday. (This will be the first-ever qualification for the State B by the combined Hitchcock and Tulare contingent.)

The other first-round games that day will feature top-rated Northwestern vs. Corsica-Stickney, Colman-Egan vs. Bridgewater-Emery and last but not least Region 2B bracket co-champion Faulkton Area vs. third-seeded Chester Area.

In case you hadn't noticed, three of these teams were from the Lake Region Conference — Northwestern, Warner and Faulkton — and Ipswich would have been yet the fourth LRC rep this weekend.

Now for a quick recap of the three days of state high school football championships at the DakotaDome in Vermillion last weekend! The 9B victor Wolsey-Wessington was the furthest north champion, geographically speaking. Warner would have been, but the Monarchs lost a defensive struggle to Canistota/Freeman in 9A, the lone blemish to their season. Meanwhile, the 9AA winner proved to be Platte-Geddes. The four 11-man champions were Winner winning 11B, Tea Area in 11A, Pierre Riggs in 11AA and Brandon Valley in the big school competition, Class 11AAA.
