Girls play in Warner Classic, Region 2B play next week

Points were sometimes a little hard to procur in a Warner Classic non-conference girls’ basketball game between Ipswich and Arlington last Saturday in Warner. But when it was all said and done, Arlington had defeated Ipswich 36-30. Arlington got off to a 11-5 first-quarter lead and still led 25-11 at intermission. But the Tigers would claw their way back into contention during the second half, outscoring AHS 10-8 in the third quarter and 9-3 down the stretch. (Arlington had led by as many as 16 points.)

Halle Heinz would lead Ipswich that afternoon with 10 points and she included three treys. Next were Hailey Bierman and Chesney Olivier with five points apiece. (Bierman included one trey.) Halie Feldman had four points that included a trey and Bailey Pitz scored three points with Ipswich's remaining trey. Lindsey Grabowska added two points and Katie Bierman a free throw.

The Arlington point production was led by Harley Johnson with a game-high 13 points and Hadley Carlson added nine points to their cause. Addalyn Steffenson scored eight points and Jolyssa Steffenson, six points.

Ipswich obtained nine baskets that included those six treys and finished 6-16 in free throw opportunities. Arlington countered with 12 accurate baskets that included four treys and went 8-16 in free throws.

Ipswich won the rebounding war 39-33, led by Feldman with seven. The Tigers committed 14 turnovers and Arlington 15, so pretty equal there. Ipswich obtained 13 steals, led by Chesney Olivier with five. Arlington came away with 10 steals.

The girls were scheduled to host Highmore-Harrold on Tuesday, Feb. 16. They will end the regular season on Thursday in Gettysburg playing Potter County.

The girls’ Region 2B Tournament will be underway the next week. The team seeds have not been determined yet, with games to be played this week. The #8-#9 seeds will have a play-in game that is played on Feb. 22. Tuesday, Feb. 23 the winner of that game will play the #1 seed. The other games will be #4 seed vs. #5 seed, #2 seed vs. #7 seed and #3 seed vs. #6 seed. Each game will be played at the higher seed. The winners will be playing on Feb. 25 to determine the two SoDak 16 qualifiers.
