The Ipswich Tiger boys varsity outlasted Herreid/ Selby Area 41-40 in a non-conference Warner Classic basketball clash last Saturday in Warner.
The opening half was sort of a tale of two quarters. Ipswich got off to a 15-0 lead and still led 15-2 at the first-quarter break. Then it was the Wolverines' turn for a lenthy run, drawing to within two points, 21-19 at intermission.
The second half proved to be a lot tighter with HSA actually grabbing a 32-31 lead with a quarter to play. But Ipswich won the final quarter's scoring battle 10-8 to escape with the one-possession one-point lead. Ahead 41-38 courtesy of a Josh McQuarie basket, Ipswich then limited H-SA to two points down the stretch with an accurate floor shot, but missed their and-one opportunity and the Tigers would celebrate the victory.
The Tigers were led by Eric Severson's 14 points, followed by McQuarie also in double-figures with 10 points. Ty Kadlec finished with seven points that included a trey and Taylor Thorson was next with five points, also including a trey. Carter Geditz and Carson Gohl each contributed two points and Matt Hettich a free throw.
The Wolverines were led by Carter Tisdall with 14 points. Chance Gregg and Tray Hettick were both next with eight points, while three more H-SA players got into their scorebook that afternoon.
Ipswich made 18 floor shots that included the two treys and was 3-8 in free throw attempts. The Wolverines countered with 16 baskets that included two treys as well and were 6-9 in free throws.
Ipswich obtained 23 rebounds and H-SA 28. McQuarie led a balanced effort for the Tigers with four retrieves. The Tigers committed 10 turnovers and helped force the 18 H-SA miscues with 10 steals, also led by McQuarie's three thefts.
Ipswich's remaining regular-season game will be a conference one in Leola on Friday, February 26 to face Leola-Frederick. Then the post-season Region 2B drama is set for next week. The final pairings will determine the parallel bracket championship showdowns, which were not available at presstime.

The other games will be #4 seed vs. #5 seed, #2 seed vs. #7 seed and #3 seed vs. #6 seed. Each game will be played at the higher seed.
