Two Aberdeen based basketball teams had their seasons come to an end last week in the Barnett Center in Aberdeen. The Northern Wolves, hosting their regions, lost a heart-breaker in overtime in the championship game. Aberdeen Christian also lost a State B championship bid on Saturday there, dropping a 59-43 outcome to top-seeded DeSmet.
This seemed to be one of those tournaments where everybody was really playing for second place, with DeSmet gaining convincing wins on its way to its B championship. Aberdeen Christian had upset Canistota 55-49 in their opener, then added a 60-53 semifinal win over Dell Rapids St. Mary.
The Knights had qualified for last year's B and this would have been their second straight trip to the B, but the pandemic cancelled last year's boys event.
Meanwhile, Saturday's slate of games started with Canistota topping Lyman 59-44 for seventh and White River outlasted Lower Brule 74-72, surviving an errant last second trey attempt by the Sioux in the fifth-place game.
The third-place State B confrontation was won by Dell Rapids St. Mary 76-58 over Viborg-Hurley.
Meanwhile, the State A tourney in Sioux Falls was won by Sioux Falls Christian 64-50 over Sioux Valley and Sioux Falls O'Gorman topped Sioux Falls Roosevelt 60-37 in their AA tourney finals. (Aberdeen Central won the consolation championship over Brandon Valley 55-50.)
Basketball fans can still turn their attention to NCAA outcomes in both the women and men's tourneys and you can also check out the NBA once its post-season playoffs get underway.
