Fiddlin' Around

This is Fathers Day weekend, as well as Trail Days in Ipswich. Tena's nephew Zach just became a new father of a little baby girl born on yet another June holiday Flag Day, June 14. Her proud parents, Zach and Tristan Beitzel, currently live in Rapid City. They welcomed Sayler Rae at 4:30 p.m. For those interested, she weighed 6 pounds 14.9 oz.

We remembered to put up the office flag on Flag Day, but not our flag at home.

The first observance of June 14th, Flag Day was organized in 1885 by a 19-year-old schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wis., Bernard J. Cigrand. He was passionate about the U.S. flag and after three decades of effort President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed in 1916 that June 14 was Flag Day.

It's not one of the more common holidays sandwiched in between Memorial Day and Independence Day. It was declared a national day of remembrance, not quite a national holiday, by President Harry Truman in 1949.

Speaking of that the Fourth of July is actually on a Sunday this year and that doesn't happen very often. At any rate it should definitely be a long holiday weekend!
