The Ipswich National Honor Society (NHS) was unable to take their trip to New York and Washington DC in 2020 due to COVID-19.
This month, the Ipsodak NHS Educational Adventure included students from the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022.
The 22 students and nine adults drove to Minneapolis on June 12. They stayed overnight to catch the United flight the next morning. They flew into New Jersey and headed for New York City.
There the group drove by Yankee Stadium. Their nine miles of walking that day included Grant's Tomb, Grand Central Station and Rockefeller Center. They walked part way across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Day two found the IHS group in New York City in Central Park and shopping on Fifth Avenue. They walked 9.5 miles that day. While there were no plays to see on Broadway, they enjoyed a dinner show at Medieval Times and Times Square.
Still in New York on day three, they saw the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street and the 9-11 Memorial. Then they traveled to Philadelphia, where they saw Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. After a day of walking eight miles to see a variety of sights, they arrived in Washington D.C. in a thunderstorm.
Day four was a busy day, viewing many of Washington D.C.'s famous sites. The 11-mile day included the White House, Arlington National Cemetery and the change of the guards, and Mt. Vernon. The day also included the Washington and Lincoln Memorials, World War II Memorial and Vietnam Memorial.
The tired tourists met South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson at the Capitol. The IHS students were Rep. Johnson's first group after COVID stopped visits. They also saw Ford's Theater, the National Cathedral and the National Zoo. After walking 10 miles, they flew back to Minneapolis.
The IHS students stayed overnight in Hutchinson, Minn. and enjoyed a birthday party for Tarynn Kleffman, a NHS member.
No doubt there were some napping as the group headed home.
