Football season opens with big win

Ipswich played nearly error-free football in a high school football season opening win last Friday in Langford. Their efficiency with the football, including minimal penalties, was impressive resulting in a 50-8 LRC victory.

The Tigers controlled the line of scrimmage on boh sides of the ball.

Ipswich showed that early on by forcing a Lion punt attempt. It was blocked, giving the Tigers the ball at the Lions’ 20 for the Tigers’ first red-zone scoring opportunity. The short drive was capped by a Luke Peterson three-yard run and Ian Beyers passed to Carter Geditz for the two-point conversion and an early 8-0 lead.

The Lions responded with a kick return to near midfield, but Ipswich held on downs and took over at the Lions’ 43. Tyler Hettich got the call and broke free for an one-play TD drive, followed by a Luke Peterson PAT run and a 16-0 Tiger lead. That would actually prove to be enough, but the visitors weren’t through by any means.

The hosts had to punt and Ipswich took possession of the football. Ian Beyers quickly found Ty Kadlec for a 57-yard aerial hook-up. Carson Gohl added the PAT run for a 24-0 IHS lead, still in the opening quarter.

Gohl wasn’t through yet with a 30-yard TD scamper after a Lions’ punt. Hettich added a PAT carry and Ipswich would lead 32-0. Ipswich also created a 8-yard scoring carry by Hettich for a 38-0 lead.

Langford Area then put together a nice scoring drive to get on the board late in the half and trailed 38-8 after adding their two-point conversion.

Ipswich would get two second-half scoring opportunities starting the third quarter with a Gohl 35-yard TD carry. Chet Peterson added Ipswich’s final TD in the fourth quarter with a three-yard scamper.

Ipswich rushed for 358 yards, led by Gohl’s 94 and Hettich’s 58. Ian Beyers finished with a 1-1 passing evening, all on that Tiger 57-yard TD score.

Langford Area finished 30-83 in rushing and was led in passing by Ben Gustafson 4-8 for 29 yards.

Defensively Ipswich was led by Carter Geditz with nine tackles, followed by Hettich and Luke Peterson with five each.

Ipswich, now 1-0 and also 1-0 in league play, will host a non-league opponent, Dupree, on Friday in Ipswich.
