The Ipswich cross country contingent attended an invitational in Pierre last Friday. They split up their entrants there so as to obtain more experience against runners from all the different divisions that ranged from high school varsity down to the middle-school divisions.
Ipswich didn't enter any of its girls into the varsity meet at Pierre, but Ashlinn Hartwell won the girls' JV division, conquering the 4K course in 17:46.87. Madisyn Gellhaus placed fourth in the same division in 18:18.42, where Gracyn Kadlec was fifth in 18:30.47. Gabrielle Wald placed 11th there, clocked at 20:11.72 and Ava Davis was 14th in 21:27.97. Chloe Jager was 29th in 26:19.40 and Hailey Usselman, 30th in 26:28.38.
Aubree DeRaad claimed the girls' middle-school title with her 14:23.24 effort. This course measured 3K. Katelyn Tufte was 22nd in 16:53.29, while Bella Unser was 41st in 19:05.21.
And now for the boys! The Tigers did feature one varsity runner in the person of Taylor Thorson who was 15th in 15:48.78. Aberdeen Central's Josh Martin won that event in 12:50.50.
Ipswich didn't fare too badly in the boys' JV competition, though. Dylan Wald was fifth in 15:30.45, while Turner Thorson was ninth in 16:20.11 and Xavier Kadlec finished 17th in 17:14.00. (Aberdeen Central's Rylan Johnson won that competition clocked at 14:54.91.)
Getting a taste of boys' middle-school competition that day from Ipswich were Jase Stiles placing seventh in 14:26.44 and Clayton Horst, 20th in 15:15.97. Tyler Gellhaus rounded out the effort with his 29th-place 16:21.36 clocking.
The Tiger runners next have a meet at Fisher Grove State Park near Redfield on September 2 and will then get ready for the Ipswich Tigers Invite on September 11 at Split Rock Country Club, scheduled for 10 a.m.
