Tiger gridders stop Dupree in two quarters

Ipswich improved to 2-0 in high school varsity  football action thus far in its 2021 schedule. This was thanks to a 54-0 shutout of visiting Dupree in a non- conference battle of the Tigers last Friday in Ipswich. (This game was shortened due to the mercy rule.)

Ipswich scored 38 first-quarter points and tacked on 16 more points in the second quarter.  The IHS Tigers would have only needed their first score. That's how Ipswich again dominated the line of scrimmage from start to finish, forcing an early Dupree punt. Ipswich took possession of the football at its own 45 and needed just two plays to score. Ian Beyers passed to Carter Geditz who was brought down near the Dupree nine-yard line for a first and goal opportunity  that was too good to pass up. Carson Gohl capped the short drive with a four-yard TD carry and Ian Beyers hooked up with Ty Kadlec for the aerial two-point conversion.

Ipswich next forced a Dupree fumble courtesy of Jordan Nierman at the Dupree 15 again a red-zone location. And Ian Beyers immediately kept the ball for a TD carry and this successful PAT attempt was run by Tyler Hettich, making the score 16-0 with over eight minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Another potential Dupree scoring opportunity was erased by a Kadlec interception at the Dupree 30. Ian Beyers passed to Kadlec for the score and Luke Peterson added the PAT run for a 24-0 IHS edge.

Gohl got a two-yard TD carry later in the quarter with another Luke Peterson carry to PAT paydirt and a 32-0 IHS lead.  Gohl managed yet another touchdown carry this one of six yards. But the PAT play was unsuccessful, leaving that 38-0 first-quarter lead.

Ipswich's pair of second-quarter scores were a 24-yard TD run by Hettich followed by a Ian Beyers to Matthew Jaenisch PAT pass. And Colby Sylte later erupted for a 60-yard carry to paydirt capped by a Chet Peterson PAT run.

Ipswich earned one first down with some big-play scoring drives, while Dupree managed five first-down efforts.

The IHS Tigers rushed for 151 yards on 15 carries, led by Sylte with 60 yards all on that last TD carry and Gohl added six rushes for 43 yards. The visitors were limited to 37 rushing yards on 22 carries and 50 passing (3-11-1). Ipswich went to the air three times with two completions from Ian Beyers that covered a total of 77 yards. In receiving Carter Geditz had one of the catches for 47 yards and Kadlec the other for 30 yards.

Ipswich came up with a balanced defensive effort, led by  Ian Beyers with eight tackles. Grant Weisser and Kadlec were next with six tackles apiece.

This week is Ipswich's bye week in its overall schedule and the IHS Tigers will resume play at Northwestern on September 10.
