IHS Cross Country teams qualify for State B meet

By finishing second as a team in both the girls' and boys' Region 4B cross country outcomes last Thursday in Gettysburg, both the Tiger girls and boys will advance their entire teams intact to the State B on Saturday in Sioux Falls. (Actually the top three teams from each region will qualify for the state meet, along with the Top 20 individual regional medalists.).

The Tiger girls were second only to Potter County 8 to 13 and the IHS boys finished second to Miller 11 to 33. There were 14 Region 4B teams with at least three runners that were eligible for the boys' team standings with 63 total runners and five eligible girls' teams with 35 individual runners last Thursday. (Miller was third in the girls' outcome and Faulkton third as a team in the boys' standings.)

As for the girls, Highmore-Harrold's Autumn Fallis was first individually in 19:17 and Potter County's Danika Kaup was second in 20:08.81, followed by Ipswich's own Madisyn Gellhaus who would be a close third in 20:10.17. Next was Gracyn Kadlec in sixth at 20:42.61 and Ashlinn Hartwell was seventh in 20:59.50, followed by Gabrielle Wald 12th in 21:24.69. So Ipswich would have individually landed four girls' into the Top 20 who would have each qualified for the state meet that way. Ava Davis also competed for Ipswich last Thursday and was 26th in 24:29.02.

Now for the boys, this varsity meet was individually won by Miller's Pierce Baumberger in 16:51.64. The runner-up turned out to be Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County in 16:52.29, not all that far behind. Ipswich was led by Dylan Wald, placing ninth in 18:08.03 and he was followed by Taylor Thorson in 13th at 18:21.12 and Xavier Kadlec was 14th in 18:28.31. Their next finisher would be Turner Thorson in 18th at 18:54.45. So here again there would have been a quartet of Tiger boys individually entering the State B on Saturday.

There was also an abbreviated regional JV meet, where Ipswich's Clayton Horst was sixth among the boys in 17:13.65 and Tyler Gellhaus placed ninth for the boys in 17:47.82. There were also some JV girls and Bella Unser was sixth in 20:50.39 and Chloe Jager 11th in 22:32.26 followed by Hailey Usselman in 12th at 23:05.11.

The State B girls will take off at full speed on Saturday at noon, followed by the Class B boys doing likewise at 1:30 p.m. This is at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls.
