Ipswich salvaged a 1-1 split in two non-conference girls varsity basketball results during its opening week of action. The Tiger girls indeed came away with a 53-35 victory on the road vs. Hitchcock-Tulare last Saturday.
The Tigers signaled their intentions early in the contest with a 16-12 first-quarter lead, but the hosts were able to pull up into a 28-28 halftime deadlock. But Ipswich would restore some order to lead 38-32 with three quarters in the books. The Tigers then dominated their hosts 15-3 in the final quarter to win going away.
Ipswich was led by Katie Bierman with 17 points including a trey. (Bierman also contributed seven assists and five steals.) Next in the scoring column were Quincy Olivier and Gabby Wald with 10 points apiece to also reach double-figures. Karlie Gohl added seven points including a trey and Baylee Kulesa tallied three points, as did Brianna Geditz with a trey. Kaylin Onken came up with a basket for her two points that evening and Ashton Weig scored one point.
The hosts were led by Katelyn Schroeder's game high 20 points.
Ipswich shot 22-50 from the floor that included those three treys and finished 6-16 in free throws. The hosts countered with 10 baskets that featured four treys and were 11-18 at the charity stripe.
Ipswich out-rebounded the Patriots 53-29 and had 15 turnovers compared to the hosts' 12.
Ipswich was scheduled to host North Central in LRC league action on Tuesday, Dec. 14 and the girls were then set to play host to Langford in yet another league affair on December 17 and will also host Webster along with the Tiger boys on December 18. Next would be a December 21 homecourt girls' clash with Waubay/Summit.
