Big Bo Classic - Girls basketball class of the Tigers

The Ipswich girls varsity lost a girls' high school basketball battle of the Tigers December 30, 2021 during the Big Bo Classic hosted by Wolsey-Wessington. The Dupree Tigers outlasted the Ipswich Tigers 55-41.

But Ipswich would definitely hang around within striking distance, after trailing 18-7 after a quarter and facing a 28-18 halftime shortfall. Ipswich would indeed close to within a 39-30 deficit with three quarters in the scorebook after outscoring their counterparts 12-11 in the third stanza. Katie Bierman would indeed open the third quarter with a five-point mini run that included an old fashioned three-point play. So Ipswich would shrink their deficit to 28-23 at that juncture of the game. And Bierman would open the final quarter with a trey.

But Dupree would outscore Ipswich from then on, resulting in its eventual 14-point advantage.

Bierman was able to lead Ipswich with 22 points and that included a trio of treys. But additional IHS scoring tapered off to six points by Karlie Gohl on two accurate trey attempts. Next was Ashlyn Weig with four points and Rylee Kleffman and Kaylin Onken with three points each. (Kleffman included a trey.) Sommer DeRaad scored two points and Quincy Olivier a free throw.

The game-high scorer would be from the Dupree Tigers' roster, T. Jewett, with 24 points. And M. Chasing Hawk also reached double-figures that afternoon with 10 points.

The Dupree Tigers were 21-57 from the floor and included four treys. They were nine of 22 in free throw tries. Ipswich countered with a 16-48 floor-shooting performance that featured those six treys and was 3-6 in free throw tries.

Dupree was out-rebounded 39-36 helped by a balanced Ipswich effort, led by Baylee Kulesa, Gohl and Onken with four rebounds apiece. Ipswich had 12 turnovers; Dupree, only seven in a well-played floor game by both teams. Ipswich featured seven steals, led by Gohl's three thefts.

Weig and Bierman each had four assists. The IHS Tigers totaled 13; Dupree, 19.

Ipswich was to play a girls/boys twinbill versus Warner in Warner and this would indeed be a league affair on January 6. There will also be a rescheduled girls-only game in Ipswich vs. Langford Area in the Tiger Den on Jan. 10. The IHS girls will also play Northwestern in Mellette on January 13 in more LRC drama.
