Tiger boys battle to final buzzer on the road

The Ipswich Tiger boys' basketball team dropped a close verdict to Sully Buttes on January 11 in Onida. The Tigers indeed experienced a 35-33 shortfall at the final buzzer of a back and forth game to say the least. For instance the score was tied six times and there were four lead changes as well.

Another somewhat unusual aspect of the game was that there were very few free thows. Ipswich didn't even go to the line once all night and the hosts made two of their four free throw opportunities. So those two free throws would prove to make a huge difference.

One of those ties was at the first-quarter break, 10-10. Sully Buttes would then outscore Ipswich 10-6 in the second quarter for a four-point halftime lead. But Ipswich would dominate the third-quarter scoreboard 9-2, giving the Tigers a 25-22 lead with a quarter to play. That's when the Chargers would recapture what little momentum there was that evening.

The hosts only obtained five scorers, led by Marshall Wittler with 11 points and Dwight Kinney with 10 counters.

Ipswich responded with 10 points apiece from Ian Beyers and Ty Kadlec. They would each include a pair of treys. So would Trevor Heinz for his six points. Ipswich's remaining trey would be launched by Trevor Beyers, totaling five points. Carter Geditz added two points to the Tiger cause.

Ipswich included those seven treys in its 13 total baskets. Meanwhile Sully Buttes finished with 15 accurate field goals, of which three were treys and added their two free throws.

Ipswich was out-rebounded 26-12, despite three rebounds apiece by Carter Geditz and Kadlec. The Tigers sustained 10 turnovers; Sully Buttes, 17, one of the positive aspects of the game. Eleven of those would indeed come from Tiger steals, led by Kadlec with four thefts.

The IHS boys and girls were set to play a doubleheader in Roscoe vs. North Central on Jan. 18. Two more doubleheaders were planned this week at home — against Faulkton on Jan. 20 and against James Valley Christian on Jan. 22.
