Ipswich hosts Aberdeen Christian Knights in doubleheader action

Ipswich hosted a talented Lake Region Conference boys' varsity basketball opponent, Aberdeen Christian, on Tuesday, February 8 in the Tiger Den and came out on the short end of a 61-47 final verdict.

The visitors would outscore Ipswich 21-16 in the final quarter to assure their win. They had led 40-31 at the third-quarter break, but Ipswich would continue to hang around within striking distance.

The Tigers had gotten off to an impressive 5-0 lead thanks to a Carson Gohl basket and a Taylor Thorson trey. And the visiting Knights would still trail 12-9 after a quarter. And Thorson would open the second-quarter, spinning his way to the hoop for an easy scoring opportunity. And a little later in that stanza thanks to an Ian Beyers trey, Ipswich would open up a 17-11 lead, which would turn out to be their largest of the night.

The Tigers only trailed 26-20 at halftime, still very much in it to win it. But the visitors opened the third quarter with three straight treys (much like they had done later in the half) to further distance themselves from the Tigers. And you know the rest of the story.

The Knights were led by a quartet of double-figure scorers, Ethan Russell with 17 points, Jackson Isakson with 16 points, Andrew Brennan with 11 points and Malek Wieker with exactly 10 points. Only two more Knights would enter their scorebook that evening.

Ipswich, meanwhile, would obtain 15 points from Taylor Thorson that included one trey. Next was Trevor Beyers with nine points with a trio of treys and Carter Geditz added eight points. Ty Kadlec scored seven points also including a trey. Ian Beyers totaled his six points with a pair of treys. Gohl completed the evening with that opening basket for his pair of points.

The Tigers included those seven treys among their 17 accurate baskets and finished 6-8 in free throw opporunities. Meanwhile the Knights would come away with their barrage of nine treys and 21 total field goals in 44 tries. They were an even warmer 10-13 in free throw attempts.

Ipswich ended up with 31 total rebounds; the Knights, 35. The Tigers were led by Taylor Thorson with nine boards, almost a double-double. Ethan Russell did come away with a Knights' double-double thanks to his game-high 13 rebounds.

The Tigers were hampered by only nine turnovers, while the Knights sustained 12 miscues. Ipswich indeed had eight steals led by Ian Beyers with three. (The Knights only came up with two steals that evening.)
