Comments on March weather from 47 years:
In looking thru my weather records of March I found that I made this comment about 18 of the 47 months of March. (Normal temps. for March) which meant around 41° for average high and 20° for average low.) For moisture I found that only 20 of the 47 months of March exceeded the average for precip. which is 1.12. This means that 27 months were short of the average of 1.12 and that some of the 20 months that did exceed, were fairly high amounts to bring the average up to 1.12.
These are some months of March which exceeded average temps. or precip.
• 1976: The average high for this month of 40° is close to what is typical. The average high for the last half of this March was 50° which sets up a pattern for March of having the first half rather cool and the last half a lot warmer. Also typical for March is having snow pack at times but not for the complete month.
• 1977: 23 days of 40° or higher – Only 3 days of below zero temps. – Two good rains (no snow) during this month of 1.40 and the 11th and 1.17 on the 29th which helped add up to a total of 3.64 for the month which is the most precip. for March I have ever recorded.
• 1985: Mild month with no temps. below 40° after the 6th day of the month – Only 1 day of zero or below – Good snowfall on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th days which added to 12 inches and moisture of 1.86.
• 1995: Cold month – Month started extremely cold, the middle part was rather mild, the last part had the average highs only in the middle 30s which is rare – Good wet snowfalls for the month measured 17 inches which melted down to 2.01 moisture – The most snow was 8 inches on the 4th.
I will complete my comments for March next week.
