Ipswich lost a 44-26 varsity FB outcome to Herreid/ Selby Area last Friday in Ipswich.
Ipswich got a successful scoring drive in its first possession, which was capped by Colby Sylte's 70-yard run. But the PAT play failed leaving the Tigers up 6-0 if only briefly.
The visiting team would end up with a 24-14 first-quarter lead that all started with a 55-yard TD scamper by Brenden Begeman and their successful conversion play. The Tigers were eventually forced to punt.
The Wolverines began what would prove to be a productive drive down field resulting in a Tray Hettick to Trevor Gill scoring pass of 16 yards and with the PATs a 16-6 lead. But Chet Peterson caught an 18-yard pass into paydirt from Beyers plus a successful PAT play, leaving IHS down 16-14. The Wolverines were not done yet with another successful drive of their own capped by another 16-yard TD pass from Hettick to Gill and the PATs as well.
The Wolverines would then outscore the Tigers 12-0 in the second quarter for a 36-14 halftime lead. They tacked on a couple of insurance scoring drives in the third quarter to lead 44-26 with a quarter to play despite a pair of short touchdown keepers by Beyers. And the clock would become a Wolverine ally, as neither team would be able to punch a scoring ticket during the final stanza.
Herreid/Selby Area finished with 323 total rushing yards led by 287 by Begeman and 43 from Mason Vetter. Begeman obviously would lead his team's rushing touchdown parade with three running touchdown.
The Wolverines were 8-10 passing by Hettick for 149 yards including three TD strikes. The Tigers countered with Tyler Hettich's 56 yards rushing and Beyers with 99 on the way to 155 total rushing yards. Beyers also finished 15-31 through the air for 225 yards and two interceptions. Trevor Heinz caught five passes for 97 yards, followed by Sylte with 85 yards on two catches, Peterson 58 yards on a pair of catches and Hettich three grabs for 27 yards.
Hettich led Ipswich with 11 tackles followed by Carter Geditz with nine, Darrel Yost with eight and Grant Weisser with four. Nathan Bradford led HSA with 11 tackles.
The Tigers will face Leola/Frederick Area in the Dacotah Bank Stadium on the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen on Saturday, Sept. 24. The game begins at 1 p.m.
