IHS Cross Country runners qualify for State B

Ipswich will indeed be eligible for the girls/boys combined team award at the October 22 State B cross country meet in Huron. How's that? The Tiger girls narrowly finish fourth as a team at the Region 1B in Webster last Wednesday, but individually qualified three runners in the Top 20. And the IHS boys? They will also advance three individual runners out of the region by finishing in their top 20 at the regional meet, the bare minimum of three entrants needed for team scoring purposes at the upcoming Class B state meet. (The boys also finish fourth in their regional team standings.)

"The girls tied by points (with Northwestern) and got beat via the tiebreaker so the girls got fourth," explained Coach Todd Thorson. "We still get to score as a team in both boys and girls because we qualified three boys and three girls. We just can't take the fourth and fifth runners for pushers. "

The Webster golf course is a demanding challenge for runners to say the least and will separate the men from the boys (and women from the girls). And the wind chill and intermittent showers in Webster that afternoon didn't help at all!

Northwestern's Ella Boekelheide was the individual girls varsity winner in 20:22.53. And the Wildcats' Lincoln Woodring would then also individually win the boys meet in 17:49.81. But Frederick Area won the girls' team title 26 to 29 over Northwestern. The Titan boys would then also top James Valley Christian 14 to 19 for the boys' team championship.

Ipswich's girls were led by Madisyn Gellhaus in tenth at 21:44.25 followed by Gracyn Kadlec in 12th at 21:56.18 and Aubrey DeRaad 16th in 22:24.47. Their next runners would be Ava Davis in 29th at 25:10.50 and Bella Unser 31st in 25:44.09. Ipswich had one JV girl that day -- Hailey Usselman 18th in 18:44.44.

Now for the boys! Ipswich landed Dylan Wald in eighth at 18:454.69 during the boys' varsity event and Xavier Kadlec was 11th clocked at 18:53.38. Next was Turner Thorson in 13th at 19:08.84. Tye Pietz was then next at 30th in 21:39.53 followed by Tyler Gellhaus 32nd in 22:11.81. The IHS JV boys were then represented by Clayton Horst in 16th at 15:32.66 and Jace Stiles 18th in 15:43.53 during their JV outcome.

The State B will indeed take place on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Huron in conjunction with the A and AA events. The "B" Girls will race at 1 p.m. and the "B" Boys will run at 2:30. The awards ceremony will begin after all the races are done at 3 p.m. The afternoon activities begin with the "A" Girls at 12 noon.

The Ipswich Cross Country welcome home/awards night will be at 5:30 p.m. in the School Theatre on Sunday.
